Dealer charging for diesel on a new car.

Featured Replies

I am in the process of purchasing a new shape Vrs. The dealer has asked for the cost of £30  for fuel to be put into the car. Is this Now common practice.  I know it's been a few years since purchasing a new car. Any info helpful.

Also do Skoda U.K charge the garages for delivery to there showrooms as I am being charged £500 delivery charge,  that I thought was to my address.

Nobody is going to fill your car with fuel free of charge. If you car comes with a 'free' tank of fuel, all that means is you've already paid for it in the purchase price. The trick is to negotiate that 'free' tank of fuel BEFORE you buy the car.

Nobody can hold a gun to your head and demand £30. If they say it's company policy or words to that effect, just tell them to keep the car and you'll buy it elsewhere. It's amazing how quickly company policies can change.

Delivery charges. Your £500 is paying for the car to be transported from the factory to the dealership. From the dealership to your home is by seperate arrangement with the dealer.

Hello Scot5,

Thanks for explaining the delivery charge.  The cars I have purchased over the years they all came with fuel,  just seemed strange for the dealers to ask for payment for fuel. I am more than happy  with my deal with the dealerships.

As long as the dealership is near enough to a filling station just collect it with whatever fuel they have put in the vehicle and pay no extra.

They got the car off a transporter with fuel and did a PDI.

It is not sitting on empty.

It's many years since I collected a new car with a full tank of fuel (IIRC it was in 1999).

I think they deliberately only put 1 - 1.5 litres of fuel in them, not sure if its for security reasons but a main dealer around here was robbed by a pair of typically mentally challenged locals, they tried all the keyfobs hanging on the rack till they had the keys for the 2 new vehicles that they wanted.

Both were found abandoned in nearby villages one 7km away, the other 12km away having run out of fuel.

My MIL picked up her 'new' car a few months ago (pre-reg Jazz and it came with well over half a tank of fuel...   It may have been factored into the price but either way was the right gesture from the dealer.

They do not come off the transporter in 'In transit mode' with the 'Low fuel' warning light on.
