Can I use either 256mm or 260mm brake discs?

Featured Replies

I need to replace both rear brake discs. The PR code is 1KF but it seems Skoda changed the disc size around 2009. According to a post I found. It doesn't entirely make sense though.

the rear discs will be 256 for a car produced (not registered) before 02/11/2009 and your chassis number places your car as having been built in Wolfsburg Germany during February 2009. That makes the discs part number 1K0 615 601 AC and I get the pads as being 1K0 698 451 G. The disc used to be a 260-mm and has now been replaced by a 256-mm and if you think that is 4-mm, 2-mm of opposing outer edges, its nothing

EuroCarParts gives me two sizes for my reg, 253 and 256mm. The Skoda dealer says it's 260mm and a data sheet I found for 1KF says 260mm. So it looks like I've narrowed it dowm to either 256mm or 260mm.

I found a set of 260mm on eBay but eBay's build in match-by-reg tells me these won't fit my car but I think eBay is wrong.

Can I use either 256mm or 260mm or does it have to be an exact match?

What would you do?

I would fit 260mm ones if that is the original size.  I fitted Ebc ones which are 260mm to mine which is a for a  Pd140 2.0tdi

If it's advertised for an estate will that also be fine for saloons etc, ?

Can't see there being any difference between estate and saloon brake set up, important bit is the diameter of the discs.  If in doubt double check the part numbers against the manufacturer website.

It might sound like a stupid question, but have you measured the  diameter of the old discs?

Well I have now but I couldn't get the caliper carrier bolts off for a while. Even measuring them I get 258mm everyway way I try it. You may say well your just not measuring it 100% accurately but that's as accurate as I can do it with a metal ruler.

It seems that 260mm was the standard for Octavia mk2's pre around September 2009 then they started using 256mm.

Same with a variety of other parts such as caliper piston sizes, they were 41mm now they are 38mm. Eurocarparts however has not updated their site and are wanting to sell me 256mm discs and pads that are 2mm to wide.

The dealer says I need 260mm discs and so does the data sheet that WINO linked me.

I'm glad this site is here as I would have fitted 256mm discs, which would go on however I know the pads wouldn't have fitted and I would have probably called out a mobile mechanic and both of us would have been scratching our heads as to why nothing was fitting/working. I guess we would have just phoned Skoda and realised our mistake eventually.

Apparently you can file down the sides of brakes pads to fit though this is a DIY hack and I wouldn't advice it.

Only 2mm difference on the radius though so if the 260mm clear the caliper then cannot see why they would be a problem even if 256mm were intended size.

It may cause a ridge after time though and wonder if this would cause an mot issue????

Yes, I'm still a novice at DIY repairs and I understand now that 256mm would likely work no problem.
