Cam belt change time

Featured Replies

So now done 108775 miles and Skoda say it will be time to change the cambelt, no mention of pump. Price £549, eye watering. Four years ago £350 including pump . Also say front discs and pads at 70% worn , £195. First time for discs, pads once before. Whats the current price from Skoda dealers for these. It has been from new Skoda dealer for everything barring tyres , the spare had gone too 2.5mm, they quoted a figure which I ignored and National done my Bridgestone for £64.46.

Might say brakes 70% worn, but then dealerships can say the same at 2 or 3 years old.

That is a change for 80% worn regardless of if true or not.

?

How has the spare gone to 2.5mm, is it a used tyre that went in the car at 2.5 mm or is it wearing without ever going on the car?

The Fixed price Service and maintenance menu for cars 3-10 year old no linger gives the crazy prices that main dealerships might ask for Disc and pads replacement.

Cambelt Diesel £449.

Petrol £479.

What matters is the engines where you want to be doing the belt and the pump rather than those where you might not.

Diesel Cambelt and waterpump £549.

Regarding the 2.5 mm tyre. One winter slid into high kerb and damaged the wheel and tyre. No other damage but whilst talking to a guy at the garage he said they have a identical wheel for £10 tyre worn .So no brainer and it has been in boot forever more passing all mots without comment. As for the other points mentioned have to go with the flow . Thanks.

I got my Diesel cam belt and water pump done in 2017 at a main dealer for £529 I think. So based on the prices given above the cost has only increased by £20 in three years.

@pastiche Spare wheels / tyres are not part of the MOT hence why never a comment on it.

My car was in with Skoda recently and the paperwork said that next August I would need a new timing belt at a cost of £549 - same as your quote. But when going through the paperwork with me verbally he said that the £549 is today's price and in the new year it will rise to over £600 !!

So just found my receipt for when this was done. It was £484.99 for cam belt and water pump which is a big difference to today's prices.

So if the price increases a lot would one have it done 10 months earlier?

It's entirely your choice, it's something you're going to have to do anyway (assuming you're keeping the car for the next few years).

Check some local independent VW garages and compare the prices, when I got mine done the Indy was only £5 cheaper but only after I showed them Skoda prices he was willing to knock a little off, before he saw Skoda price he wanted £499.

I see no harm in changing early especially if it saves you some cash.

The timescales are advisory and no way a guarantee, which I found out the hard way many years ago.
