Cambelt change

Featured Replies

Is it my imagination that after having cambelt/pump change the car is running smoother and quite.?.

It would make sense that it would be, especially if the old belt was quite old previously.

I need mine done and am looking around for somewhere.

Where did you get it done and what was the cost? were you happy with everything?

Partly the placebo effect. Whenever I service my cars or change parts, they always seem better! :)

Tangible effects, a newly fitted belt correctly timed may well result in smoother running... how many mechanics would even consider measuring the old belt's torsion value just for a before and after comparison.

An oil change will certainly make things run smoother, quieter and improve response.

Might be, when I refill my car after driving with low fuel, it feels smoother and nicer lol.

The correct torsion value can make a huge difference to driveability and general "feel" often well beyond what can be measured.

I agree, having felt the benefits myself I wish that I had measured the torsion value before the belt change.

As an aside does anyone know if the torsion value can be measured on the 2.0 TDI common rail engine? Mine is a CFHF engine but I have seen no VCDS parameter unless it has been changed to an even less relevant term.

@J.R.

I am only speculating that given everything mechanical lines up on a CR engine the ECU is in complete control of fuel injection so the torsion value is no longer required.

When I remove the upper cambelt cover I will look to see if there are the bolts for the so called (not) vernier adjustment.

When I think of it on the PD engine its much more important because the secondary injection Deuse pumps are advanced or retarded with the camshaft position, I know the injectors are timed by the ECU but the rise in injection pressure is a function of the torsion angle.

So I think you are right & I will find no adjustment which will be a relief after the PD.

@J.R.

What you gain somewhere you lose elsewhere!

The last change was 4 years ago , had front pads done as well , cost of cam and pump £549 plus £190 for brakes. All work from new by Skoda dealer. Mine is Beadles.

I did say is it my imagination why it is running so good, well its not my imagination it is running really smoother and quite, because of the cov situation not had a chance of finding whether mpg has improved. For the record I have had three cambelt changes with 108k on the clock.
