Fuel gauge not working

Featured Replies

Hi Everybody

I own a 2002 1.4l petrol Fabia.

For the last year or so the fuel gauge has not been working properly; it initially gives 'a' reading, but then after 30 seconds or so just drops to zero . Generally this initial reading is accurate, but i suspect once you get to a half empty tank it then gives completely wrong readings ( I once had a 'reading' of approx half full, but the tank was in fact empty, as I found out to my cost...). I also have an issue with the LED displays not working properly and some warning lights intermitently lighting up very dimly

The car had been with Skoda on a seperate matter; paying for a 'Diagnostic' established that, amongst other things, that the'Electrical track of the sender in tank was worn'. It was also noted that 'Instrument warning lights lit up dim with no stored faults..'

Thinking that a new sender would sort the fuel gauge problem at least, I just had this replaced; only to find that when I collected the car the same issue was present.

When I explained this to the mechanic there, he was not interested and just said 'we did also indicate a problem with the Instrument panel...'

Any ideas of the fuel gauge issue, and what is your view of what has happened at Skoda..

Thank you for your time

Reflow the solder joints of the instrument cluster connectors, that should fix at least the fuel gauge, not sure about the illumination.

Wino,

Thank you for your reply.

I have come across posts with similar issues; as I am not in a position to do this myself, who could I turn to to have this done?

If you can be without the car for a few days, and know how to remove and refit the cluster, you could send it to me. Can post back same day as I receive it. PM me if you want.

Ahhh,the kindness of Strangers

Unfortunately, this would be wayyyy out of my capabilities ( I can just about change an airfilter, lol)

Thank you So much for your kind offer tho, it was truly appreciated..

It's probably not much harder than changing an air filter to be honest.  Not sure if there's a youtube video showing cluster removal on a mk1 Fabia, have a search.

Would it be safe to assume your location is somewhere in the NW of England?

Wino,

You are correct,Sir ~ Fair point, but I would feel Very reluctant to attempt this ......

Maybe ask a trusted local garage to give you a price for removal and refitting, then send it to me in the middle of those operations if it's affordable? You couldn't move the car in between though, which might require an understanding gaarage (or mobile mechanic/auto-electrician?).

It's under ten minutes work each way taking things very steadily and carefully, in my experience.

Wino,

After digging on line looks like there is a specialist near-ish to me for Instrument cluster repairs.

Think this should sort out my little problem...

Thank you again for your time.
