Does cruise control use the brakes?

Featured Replies

Been playing with the cruise control on the 06 Fabia vRS as done some travelling recently. Rather good. But how does it work when going downhill, does it use the brakes?

No it doesnt apply the brakes, it will cut the throttle but it cant maintain speed downhill if gravity takes over.

Nope. :) HTH :D

Damn you Ross.

I found this out recently :( The CC I had on my Astra MK4 did use the brakes, very handy for speed camera avoidance - the Octavia cruise doesnt allow such easy acceleration via the stalk either (Vauxhall does 3mph per click)

I've got the multi function steering wheel in my 03 Octavia Elegance and it's excellent. You can keep your thumb on the buttons to accelerate or decelarate very smoothly.

Glad I specced this option, handy for the stereo as well. Dealer at the time said he'd never seen one on the Octavia. :)

As said cruise doesn't use the brakes, but will maintain your speed downhill up to a certain point - if the hill isn't too steep. This is much more effective on diesel than petrol engined cars.

I retro-fitted cruise on my 1.8T and find changing speed with the stalk a waste of time. Its a fiddle to keep your finger on the button against the spring :( With the Vauxhall one you could press the + button 3 times and speed would increase by 9mph etc.

Still a worth while modification though, especially on the motorway.
