Battery replacement - do i have to code for the new battery?

Recommended Posts

My Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI 2019 with start/stop is only about 2 years old, but a couple of times now the car has shown that the battery voltage is low. Idle voltage is 11.80 when measured directly to the battery with a multimeter, so I decided it was time to change the battery.

The old battery is a 59Ah battery, although there is actually room for a bigger one. At the moment I am also only able to find a 70Ah battery, which would fit since the mounting bracket does have an extra hole. And besides, with start/stop, A.C., full digital cockpit, and whatever this car is running on electricity, a bigger battery would not be a bad idea in my opinion.

I have found dozens replacements batteries from reputable brands such as Varta and Bosch, but upon looking into this, I understand that some people recommend to reprogram the VCDS of the car. Do I really need to do that?

I also saw a guy using a standard OBD tool and a phone to code the battery, this seemed significantly easier. Would this be a better option?

Short answer is yes, there are lots of threads about this. If you put the same type of battery in then all you need to do is update the serial number , but if you change the type of battery (not make but actual type) then you need tell the management system what type battery you have fitted.
