What is this noise game

Featured Replies

Bit of a strange one, I know it’s impossible to diagnose over the internet so I’m not expecting a miracle

When driving at low speed, low rpm, in 2nd or 3rd gear (7 speed dsg) such coasting in traffic, when I take my foot off the accelerator there’s a brief vibration like something is knocking against the chassis.

Sometimes it might happen in 4th or 5th but more often in 2nd or 3rd between about 20-30km/h. It never occurs on acceleration just deceleration

Video here:

It’s the same video looped 30 times as it’s quite hard to replicate when you’re trying, but seems to occur easily during normal driving

When I take my foot off the accelerator you hear the click of the accelerator pedal followed by a short ‘brrr’ sound, best I can describe it words. I’ve no idea where in the car it’s coming from as I can’t hear it when the window is open, it doesn’t sound like it’s coming from the inside the cabin. Doesn’t occur in neutral or reverse.

The car is going into the dealer in a couple of weeks to look at the creaking rear suspension so I was thinking about getting them to investigate at the same time, but it’s hard to replicate so I’m sure I will just get the can’t hear it no fault found runaround

Thoughts on what it could be?

Loose heat shield? Fuel pipe rattle? Something in the engine?

Fuel pipe rattle would be my first guess if it's a 280/272 but the gas pedal should not "click".

Fuel pipe rattle occurs at a certain point between 2000-3000rpm (different on some cars) especially when revs are dropping from 3K down, less so when rising.

Check against this vid also:

There's a TSB for that so they should be able to fix it, if it it is that indeed.

Yeah it's not the same as in that video, as I can't replicate the sound when in neutral. I've tried revving the engine to similar RPM and releasing but no sound, so I can only assume its something to do with the car being in gear.

Sorry the "click" is just the accelerator hitting the plastic stop thing when taking my foot off the accelerator.

Ask them to check your flywheel.

Will do

Many 272 owners in Bulgaria are reporting the same issue (including myself). You're not alone:) It's not the fuel pipes one, as I had it in the past and it was already fixed (and I know the symptoms pretty well). The problem described is more like a vibration on the rear end of the car, not a rattle.

I have visited the dealer several times and they said they are aware of the problem, bu they can do nothing about it, as they have contacted Skoda and they claimed that this is "normal behaviour"....

Please let us know what happened when you visited your dealer.

My wild guess is - something related to the exhaust system, which given the specific conditions is resonating.

Interesting, good to know @didoya.  Yeah definitely a vibration and not a rattle, I can't pinpoint where its coming from. If its coming from the rear that probably explains why I can't hear it with the front window open

Classic VAG and their "normal behaviour" excuse.

In my experience the latest tsi engines are happiest with higher octane fuel, especially with DSG where it seems to go into a lean mix mode at lower revs when it is more coasting than under load.

Sort of a modern version of pinking, I have heard similar rattle on my 1 litre, but using 97-99ron fuel it doesn’t happen.   Try fuel of this grade (it also seems to improve fuel consumption by about 10-13%), so provided extra cost is under 10% you might save overall and get rid of the rattle (I don’t know if fuel saving will be different for bigger engine)

Other than factory fuel, I’ve only run it on 98 octane which is the highest I can get in Wellington

@didoya The dealer compared my superb with a few others, they've pulled the "normal behaviour" card

Naturally I don't believe them so I've asked to be provided with a Superb to test myself
