2014 1.6TDi Spaceback - EGR fault P0403 - anybody removed and cleaned one ?

Featured Replies

Hi All, Our 1.6TDi CR Spaceback  has pinged up P0403 intermittant malfunction  3 times over the last 3 years so I normally clear the faults with VCDS, so I am thinking of trying to sort it out, I know its at the back of the engine under the turbo so can I get to it by removing the intake ducting or will I have to get to it from underneath/back of the engine ? I have done a search but I carn't find anybody thats done it, are there any common faults that ping up with this fault code like blocked pipes ? and while i'm near there will anything else need cleaning ? cheers Stuart

I think you may find some videos on youtube of removal from these engines and cleaning . Removal looks hideous, from below, with horrible access. That may be why you don't find many search results on here for removal/cleaning.

Thanks Wino, I will have a look on you tube, are there any official guides for removing it, I did it on my Scout a few years ago and it was in the same place, do you know if there's any gaskets available with smaller holes in to restrict the flow ? Cheers Stuart

Bound to be, but I've not seen one.

No idea. I think in general, any attempt to do anything with the EGR system on the CRs seems to be fraught with problems.

Thanks for that wino, I didn't know it would cause problems on the CR engine so thanks for the warning, I did start having a look on a website for manuals that's linked at the start of this forum but it stopped working as I was trying to download a guide, cheers Stuart

What is the engine code, some can be fitted with an Emulator which disables the EGR.

Engine will put out more NOx, depends if you are happy with that.

Hi Piph, I wasn't going to block it off completely (CAYB) just fit a gasket that had a smaller hole so the build up was slower, I have seen some looms that cancel/emulate the EGR when you fit a total blank but I don't fancy that, It looks like I will remove the EGR and cooler, split and clean it and look at fitting a separate crankcase/oil filter again to reduce the build up, It looks as though some of the gaskets are the same as my Scout (BMM) so I could buy one with a reduced hole size, I will give TPS a bell and see what they can offer, for clarification what's the device at the front of the engine just before the metal pipe from the EGR enters the inlet manifold -

Removed it to clean and check and its the throttle body !

While you had the throttle valve removed, did you look back up the pipe towards the inlet manifold ?

Mine was greatly reduced in diameter with black gunge from the EGR.

These are the EGR simulators/ emulators if you decide to go down that route :- cayb egr emulator | eBay

The EGR sticking is a source of lots of problems with this engine including failed DPF regens.

Hi PipH, sorry for the late reply, yes I did look into the plastic inlet manifold and it didnt look too bad, I have stripped out the EGR and cooler cleaned it and am about to refit it back, took plenty of pics and listed how the parts come out so will do a guide to show others. cheers Stuart
