Converting electric to manual windows, anyone done it?

Featured Replies

Given up on finding a s/h motor unit so bought a new one for £140 but guess what turns out it's a 6Q2 not a 6Y2 although it was supposed to be compatible. It's got slightly different multiplugs (well, the big one goes in but the smaller one is too wide to go in either of the 3 multiplug sockets on the 6Q2 type (6y2 just has one big & one small socket, I'm guessing the smaller multiplug is for the passenger door). I'm loath to carve away any plastic to try and get it to fit.

So has anyone converted front windows to old fashioned handle winders? Happy to go down this route now.

Im on the verge of doing this myself. Or making my own window wiring loom.

the "classic" comes with winder windows (doesn't even have central locking!) so should be an easy swap

Mine's a classic and it has electric windows and remote central locking. Just depends what options were chosen when new.

It’s a straight swap you just need to drill a hole into your original door card for the winder, or change door card to non electric ones

I wasn't sure if the winder would reach the spindle but anyway a proper 8Y2959802 job came up for £120 recently so I thought what the hell, nearly Summer, might want windows to work (it's only been 4-5 months! Manufactured 2005 though so 2 years older than faulty one. Fingers crossed.

All I needed to do was hold the key in unlock position and lock position to get the one-touch thing to work in driver's door.

There's no way you could do it by trying to fit a manual winder handle to the electric window regulator, and there is actually no spindle because it is part of the motor. The manual one is in a totally different place and you would need to swap the whole regulator, metal panel and door card for the manual ones.

Electric (the indents in blue circles are redundant mounting points for the manual winder mechanism)....
