My Octavia 2.0 TDI is taken 8 to 10 sec to turn over today all warning lamps come on and alarms and buzzers then stalled and went dead. 

5 minutes later I started it then it stalled dash saying flat battery left for another 2 mins then started again with foot flat down on accelerator and now all ok.

Does this suggest I need new battery 7 years old?

Yes, that is a good starting place.  Dead or dying batteries will cause all kinds of problems.  Try charging the battery overnight first though.  Do you have any diagnostics (such as ODBEleven or VCDS) to get us some logs of any errors?
