Reliability of older Skodas - buying advice, good or bad idea?

Hi,  I am after some buying advice please.

 

I've never owned one before and I'm weighing up the idea of buying an older Skoda.

 

I have my eye on a 2012 Octavia Estate 1.4 TSI with FSH and 60k miles.

 

It will be a family car and we only do around 8k miles a year.

 

What's the general consensus about older Skodas?  Are they reliable?

 

I guess this more of a question of how well the car had been treated but are there certain engines that should be avoided?

What you are looking at is a pretty reliable engine.    Is it a Manual or a DSG?

Not that old though if from 2010.

What does the Full Service History Show, is it showing not everything done to the Manufacturers Guidelines or everything strictly carried out.

Over 9 years how often was the oil and filter changed, the spark plugs, the brake fluid etc.

Or is it just showing that the car had services?

 

Older Skoda can be very reliable.

as in pre Euro 4 emissions ones.

Then there are Euro 5 emissions from 2010 that are like a 1.4 TSI, that is with the Turbo & as in the Octavia, Superb, Yeti, but not the 1.4 TSI Twincharger in the Fabia Mk2 vRS.

 

1.2 TSI's 2010-2012 can have timing chain tensioner issues 2010-2011/12.

There is the DQ200 DSG's to be considered and the various Service Campaigns / World Wide Recalls excluding Europe.

 

Then with TDI's there was the Emissions Cheat and some cars that have had The Fix. Euro 5 cars.

Also DPF issues to be considered.

The one I am looking at is a manual gearbox.  Is the DSG more preferable?

 

Not enquired about the extent of the FSH, will find out and come back with answer.

 

Is it better to avoid older engines with timing chains?

 

It won't be a diesel.

If you are meaning older than 2010 then yes 1.4 TSI's had timing chain issues.

The 1.4 TSI Euro 5 140 / 150 ps engines are good and euro 6 with ACT or without. 

 

The Octavia 1.4TSI with the DSG is good but then many will swear by their manual.

The one I am looking at is a 2012 1.4 TSI 121BHP. Does that equate to 121 PS?

 

What does Euro/5/6 mean?

I guess the euro 5/6 relates to emissions. 

Euro5 is 2009/10 - 2015. 

Euro 6 the end 2015 and by 2016.        The Emission Scandal involved Euro 5 TDI's.

Is there anywhere online where I can find out what should have been replaced and when on a Skoda of this age? 

The servicing was called, Minor & Major, and this was Major each 2 years / 18,000 - 20,000 miles.

Then that changed to Skoda calling it Interim & Major if Fixed Services.

 

Changed again to Oil & Inspection Services and each 3 years Extended Scope. 

 

This is what they now show for cars on Fixed Service Intervals '9,400 miles / 372 days' which ever comes first.

That is showing for car 3-10 year old on the Fixed Price Servicing & Maintenance at participating dealers.  You can get stuff done cheaper.

I have a 2010 1.4 122 bhp, and while I like it, I'll try to provoke you to consider a slightly later car.

 

If you can afford it, the later version, with a slightly raised power output (140 bhp?) attracts a zero tax classification, due to being cleaner.

 

There is a later 1.5 engine that in some ways even better, but with tightening regulations, it is no longer zero rated.

 

For the DSG, and pleasure of driving, it depends what kind of driving you do; on a motorway, seven speeds and not much to do, the car is a pretty relaxing place to be.

 

On the other hand, if you are on it, on a country road...well, you'll want to put it in 'manual' change mode, because, under those circumstances, the DSG has a habit of choosing exactly the wrong time to shift, in a way that can't yet be reproduced by human intelligence...must be designed by aliens, who are far more advanced in matters of artificial intelligence than we mere humans are.

The 140bhp 1.4 is still Euro 5 and so the tax is the same. The later 150bhp is then 30 a year tax.

 

But they only came out with the MK3 Octavia.

 

A 2012 1.4 TSI 122 with that mileage should be fine.

 

It's advised to service them on fixed intervals though so depending when the last service was done then budget for a service and switch to fixed.

 

It's a very nice match to the DSG. Drives so lovely and smooth, quiet, effortless etc.

Yes, but it is the CO2 level that sets the tax.

 

I should have pointed out that different variants, eg Estate, can have slightly different CO2 levels, so the tax can be different.

 

And, this is Road Fund type of tax, not BiK, not that that will be relevant, in this case.
