Monte Carlo 1.2TSI cambelt replacement

Featured Replies

Hi guys

my 2016 1.2TSI Monte Carlo 90bhp is due its 5 yearly belt change.....

Went to my local garage who told me they cant do it as they don't have the special tool to hold things in place while replacing the cam-belt.... and the tool would cost 2.5k to buy!!!!!

Is this correct??? its a specialist tool to do it???

I'm in the North West, Cumbria to be precise if anyone knows of any one who could do it for me?

thanks

I have a Skoda Fabia 2015 1.2 TSI (90) that had its cam belt replaced about this time last year by an independent garage here in Tyneside. They charged me £308.22 for parts and labour, its possible your car has the same engine. Hope you find someone Joe

The garage are clearly saying they don't want to do the job. Either that, or they only buy solid gold cam locking tools!  :)

I would google about for a VW specialist garage in your area and give them a call. That said though, any competent garage should be able to do the cambelt and water pump for you.

When I had my car done I asked about the water pump and told it was on the back of the engine on a separate pulley. On my old Mk1 estate the timing belt and water pump  was combined Joe

thanks for replies guys... waterpump im not getting done as Skoda say its not needed as on opposite side to cambelt..... so is it true though they do need a specialist tool for the job???

Looked online main dealer charging £500 to replace cam belt probably there hourly charge is a big chunk of the cost and as far as a £2.5k piece of kit over time its only coppers per vehicle. I would find yourself a different garage Joe

thanks Joe I shall keep looking... not paying stealers price lol

It is only Skoda UK, VW UK, SEAT UK and Audi UK that is handing out that "5 years replacement" requirement or advice about the cam belt on these EA211 engines, the official workshop manuals point out that it is a "belt for life" (of the belt?) and after so many years, maybe 6 or 7 years, the belt should be examined in place along its entire length annually, and replaced as soon as damage is observed.

So, with that in mind, maybe revise your thinking over changing it right now, I plan to get it replaced at 7 or 8 years as that will mean only replacing it once within our ownership, I certainly do not intend on leaving it until it is showing signs of damage.

That is just my thinking on this subject as my wife's car, an August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS, has only run 33K miles from new, others might feel happier to replace at the 5 year point and walk away from worrying about a belt failure that would cause severe engine damage, I have been checking the inlet variable pulley every year from year 4 service, so checking the belt along its length does not take much more effort while I am servicing the car.

VW Group, and maybe other brands dealership's workshops, or service point, are also a bit guilty of handing out "your belt must be replaced before an MOT because the engine is rev'd to the rev limiter a few times during the MOT, it is the law!"  - I had heard that this is said, but only got it said to me once, to which I answered, "this car does not have a DERV engine" to which the answer was "sorry my mistake".
