What diagnostic tool would you recommend

Featured Replies

Hi

I have generic odb port reader. I was interested if there is reader that the casual user could use that would tell if there were any errors on the car.  I am particularly interested if any of my sensors, such as front assist are not working correctly.

Thanks in advance.

I use VCDS which is ~£225, others use OBDeleven and quite like it. I think a few still use Carista too.

If the front assist radar stopped working correctly, I would expect a warning shown on the dashboard :)

I use Obdeleven as VCDS is a bit pricey for my tastes.

So far it has worked faultlessly and you can see all the control units and live data etc. Coding and basic settings/adaptions are easy aswell. Plus I liked I could do it all from my phone. So I can leave the dongle in the glovebox incase I have any issues away from home.

Thanks for the responses. I will look at these suggestions. Really like the car. Every day. Finding something new. Yesterday looking at the auto screen wipers!

OBD11 all day long ( pro )

I used to use VCDS until my latest MK3 F/L and VCDS reported that my car was no longer supported.

I bought an OBD11 as it was cheaper than an updated VCDS cable. The OBD11 does everything I need.

However, The car wasn't used for a short while as I was recovering from surgery and I had forgotten that I had left the OBD11 in the OBD port - it drained the battery.

Ooops!!

It's the OBD11 Pro.

I thought it would be the best value for checking faults and changing features.

Obdeleven.com. I didn't buy it from ebay. There might be some on there.

It's done all I need so far.

There's plenty of mentions on this forum.

Good tip regards leaving it in!

What are the 'credits' used for with OBDEleven?

Are there ongoing costs involved, or once you purchase, that's it?

What's the difference between the 'pro' version and the others, is it just the number of credits it comes with? Is the hardware the same?

Pro version is just a licence that allows you to use the device on multiple cars and make unlimited changes via long coding. You can buy a device and then add a pro licence after.

I did this. I picked up a 1st gen OBD11 device from Amazon, delivered next day for £42. When it arrived I started an account and added a pro licence.

The device and app are quite simple to use.

One for sale on here

According to the OBDeleven website credits are needed to use the one click apps that perform operations to change settings.

I seem to remember that people have had problems using some of the one click apps. Perhaps best avoided?

Also, 36 hours left of the OBDeleven sale event...

Call me old fashioned but I  don't want to go down the route of credits. If I buy a tool I want to use it at will!

You can use OBDeleven as much as you like at will, credits are only for the one-click changes that are listed in the App.

For example to enable the Lap Timer requires 10 credits, but have a look at the sticky on top of this forum there are instructions on how to enable this yourself.

Best to avoid the one-click changes as you don't know what it is changing in the background, best to make the changes yourself so you can change them back to the way they were beforehand if you have any issues.

You get a certain amount of credits at the start and get more each day you open the app, personally i'd avoid the one-click Apps and do the long coding yourself.
