Fuel tank not filling

Featured Replies

Hello there and thank you in advance for any help given.

I just bought a used Octavia Scout 2015 2.0 TDI 150 PS and i have a strange issue...I tried filling up the tank at two gas stations and it was impossible without the gas-station's fuel pump stopping almost every second, like the tank was full.

The tank was almost empty especially the second time i tried refuelling. It took about 20 mins to fill 40 ltrs of fuel...

Since the car i bought was imported from France to Greece,is there a chance that the fuel tank's opening is not suitable for the Gas-stations' pumps here?

Is there a relief valve malfunctioning and therefore fumes pressure builds up and not letting the pump work?

Thank you all

Had this when i got my Octavia, turned out i was not pushing the pump nozzle in hard enough.

Mines really tight, you really have to be firm pushing it in.

They are very slow fillers, once you have got a little over half a tankfull in you have to release the trigger slightly and reduce the flow to stop the backpressure triggering the pump safety cut off.

And even doing that the final 4 litres can take several minutes if you want to brim it completely.

When I moved to France with a MK1 it suffered a lot less as the fuel then had more anti-foam additive than UK fuel, dont know if thats still the case but your fuel in Greece might create foam when filling which makes things 100 times worse.

They seem to have overcome the problem in the Yeti.

Literally never experienced anything like that filling up.

You have a later vehicle and also have a defoaming agent in your fuel, they had resolved the issue by then, the MK2 was better than the MK1 but still bad with French fuel.

I am now questioning whether it was the UK or French fuel that had the defoaming agent or more of it, I have brain fade

Its been more than 2 years since I filled up the MK2 Octavia in the UK and I was in the habit of very slow filling wherever I was so as to properly brim the tank, something I only need to do at the last knockings with the Yeti.

What buffles me is,that if it is a matter of defoaming agent, shouldnt the problem occur when the tank is almost full?I had this problem with the tank almost empty and both times the station's pump was stopping almost immediately...

It can be mitigated by where you put the nozzle, from memory I had to withdraw it from the fully engaged position and incline it upwards.

Check the fuel filler breather pipe, I had a blockage on my old mk 2, cleaned crud out of it, looks like a golf tee peg when pulled it , ream it out with a bit of wire ,plug it in ,,no further problems!

I've seen this on a couple of cars - slow fill to start and then continue was my solution. I agree there may be a breather pipe problem.

Edit says I remember turning the pump nozzle upside-down in a couple of cases, that seemed to help.

I have just posted a similar problem and found this.
Can you say how to do this, where do you access the breather pipe?
Thank you.
