EGR Valve 70,000 miles Śkoda FSH!!!

I have not long got a Skoda Scout 2010 with 70,000 miles and full Śkoda service history, fault with car abs code is P0403.

looks like EGR Valve at £400+VAT and 4 hours work😳😳😳

  I use the premium fuel and am annoyed!!!!! 

The obvious question is - has it had the "EA898 emissions fix"?   If so, it's likely that has led to failure of the EGR.

A Full Main Dealer Service History will be interesting.

Was any of that at Arnold Clark Inverness by chance.

Over the 11 years has the Haldex had the service first in 2014 when they were doing them at 4 years / 40,000 miles, and was the next time 3 years later and then 3 years later again. 

 

The premium fuel you use will make little difference and neither will what previous owners used.

I will go and check which Śkoda garages serviced it. Bitz garage in Nairn couldn’t fix my Transporter years ago so I go to a friends garage in Inverness. 
  The Haldex oil has been changed I remember seeing it in the book. I am annoyed that such an expensive thing has went wrong with only 70,000 miles. 
 Trying to find ways to prevent this in the future, all garages say is go very fast once a week🤔

I have never read this on any forum so thanks for mentioning it. The Śkoda garge in Inverness has closed down so will go to the VW Garage.

I have just phoned VW Garage in Invenress and my car had the emissions update in 2017 so the warranty for some parts in the exhaust system ran out in 2019.

You won't even have to worry about an Italian tune-up every week either.

 

The EGR valve plays a role in DPF regeneration so it's probably not a good idea to do this on a car which still have the PDF fitted.  

The EGR is turned off by the ECU during DPF regen, so disabling the EGR won't affect the DPF at all.

Although I have no desire to heap woe on your issues.  I think you'll find that going fast once week isn't enough.  Replace the EGR valve and have the emissions fix rolled back.   Then use good quality diesel all the time as well as thrashing it regularly.

 

The other issue is that changing the Haldex oil isn't enough if the filter isn't changed at the same time.  A 2010 car like yours will have a Gen4 Haldex which has a replaceable paper cartridge filter.  No VAG main dealership has this as a service item and they don't stock it as a spare part.  Nevertheless if you don't have it replaced, it will become clogged and the Haldex pump will fail.   You can, however, get the filter from other sources, e.g.  -  https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/genuine-haldex-filter-service-kit-generation-4-gen4.html

Thanks for that, how do I get the emissions rolled back? 
  I called Śkoda garage and they said I had the emissions software update in 2017 so the warranty for exhaust system parts lasted 2 years so ran out 2019. 
   Great tip about the filter for the Haldex system I will do that myself next time.

You'll need to find a local tuner / remapper who does it.  A quick search reveals Bitz Garage in Nairn or 8Ball Tuning in Forres.  I know nothing of these guys but if they're competent, they should be able to roll it back to the pre-fix software.  I'd be tempted to have it remapped at the same time but I'm an ageing hooligan.  YMMV.

So why do the pre-fix software do? Why do I need to do that? I know remapping can get better fuel and better acceleration, if it helps with the EGR valve I will go and ask.

The emissions fix created a spate of EGR failures.  So much so that for that 2 years you quoted, VAG were replacing them on a "good will" basis.  The consensus is that the "fix" software runs and increased amount of EGR which leads to EGR valve failure as well as poorer performance and increased fuel consumption.  Rolling it back to the original software restores EGR operation to within the original design parameters.  I'd also suggest replacing the EGR valve with an OEM spec part rather than a cheaper aftermarket one.

Thank you so much for that information. Makes me quite angry that the EGR could have failed due to a software fix by Śkoda, as it’s so expensive. I have got a proper part. £400+VAT and 4 hours to fix it. 
  So I now need to roll back the original software to stop this EGR valve from failing also. 
   Śkoda said they would give me anything towards my EGR valve, maybe I should phone them again as I am more informed? 
  I also have a noise under the car now when I go over bumps, putting me off this car🤔 I never expected such expensive problems with. 70,000 miles and Full Skoda service history.
