Temperature gauge at 110

Featured Replies

Morning all, just arrived at work and noticed the high temperature reading.

managed to do a quick scan via obdeleven (some small glitches due to battery charge) and also checked coolant level.

I’m at work now, but is this something small or will I have to get it seen to by my mechanic?

When I say that the gauge read 110, I was going by the needle.

after 90 mins I drove for about 5 miles and the needle stayed bang centre at 90 degrees.

out of curiosity I also kept an eye on the digital read out and that did go up as far as 109.

car drove fine 🤷🏻‍♂️

ps

is there a specific way to do a search, whenever I try I get everything that was ever posted.

it’ll save me clogging up the site.

Doesn’t sound great. I’d check the coolant level is correct to start with and that it looks in good condition.

Then i’d change the temperature sensor, then thermostat, then cry (head gasket)

Also i’m sure this still applies but digital reading shows higher (accurate) as the car runs higher than 90oC but the needle shows 90oC not to scare people, that was certainly the case for a Passat so I suspect it’s still the same.

So that’s why I mentioned the temperature sensor as one pole sends signal to ECU and the other to the dash

i’m not a mechanic though, but things I would try.

The only digital readout on a (or at least my) Superb is for Oil Temperature, and 109 deg is fine.

Cheers for the replies.

Mechanic reckons it’s the water pump

ffs I thought they’d sorted this with newer models.

he has yet to see it but, if it is the WP, I’ll be changing to a mechanical one and not electric.

What are you talking about?

All engines have a main mechanical water pump, on the TSI its a complex design featuring two themostats and driven by its own belt off the camshaft. In addition, Superbs have another one or two electic auxiliary water pumps, one to provide the cabin residual heating function and the other to cool the turbo.

I repeat, how did you access this digital display you refered to? The only digital temperatures shown on the dash are outside temperature and OIL temperature. Oil temperature can go to 140 deg in extreme summer max power autobahn driving. Motorway driving will see 100-110 deg as normal, round town it'll drop to  around 90-95 deg but could stay above 100 under certain contiditions.

Oil temperatures are not the same as Water temperature (as is shown on the dash dial)

If water temperatures got up 110 degrees you'd probably blowing off coolant due to the pressure in the system. The dial would go into the red and you would get a visual/audible warning to stop.

My outgoing B8 Passat has a digital temperature readout in the menu with mpg, oil temp etc. It doesn't damp to 90 degrees either, perhaps this is a feature on this engine too? I'd certainly question an oil temp on arrival at work of 110 unless the office is right at the end of a motorway slip road.

I had my fan unit fail and the readout showed the engine coolant at 110+ with an overheat warning.

It could be your fans unit has failed? When driving the airflow through the radiator would be enough to keep it at 90. Let it idle and listen for the fans kick in when the guage gets to around 90?

110 deg Oil is perfectly ok, in fact its better than 95 deg as it guarantees any water in the oil is boiled off.

Radiator fans are controlled by Water Temperature not Oil Temperature.

What engine is this anyway?

Apologies for confusing the living s**** out of people.

it’s been somewhat of a stressful day.

the needle reading is to do with the coolant, it was definitely around the 100+ mark.

for some unknown reason I threw the oil temperature into the mix 🙄

it’s a 150 tdi Sportline

the WP went on my 110tdi mark 2 superb also two years ago.
