Shuddering while Braking DSG VRS

Featured Replies

Someone with more knowledge in this

might know more than me.

Basically I had shuddering in October last year with previous discs and pads. All replaced with new Brembo discs and pads. Shuddering when away. Now it’s started again, how is this possible?

Could there be a further issue here? Calliper causing the problem? Could I be “warping” the discs with heavy braking to slow down? I make sure if I am stopping from a high speed that I allow the brakes to cool at nights and not to sit with my foot on the brake pedal but it’s hard at times when it’s a DSG.

Also had a brake fluid change in October last year while all discs and pads were changed.

Please help it’s doing my nut in and my wallet.

Cheers.

A common brake problem with automatics is creating hot spots on discs when coming to a halt especially after heavy braking, then holding the car on the foot brake in the same position on the disc. The hot pads warp the disc in a specific spot.

I have seen this happen a lot on different manufacturers, very common on high performance cars as they tend to be driven in a more more enthusiastic manner :).

I tend to come to a halt then let the car roll a foot or so before stopping again.

Apologies, i didnt read all your post, i see you already do this

The best way would be to adjust your driving style. Brake earlier and dont rely on your brakes to stop you last minute.

I generally don't sit with the foot brake on. I put my dsg into neutral and put the handbrake on.  For quick stop/go at junctions I do use the foot brake but not if i am waiting for any length of time.

Do they shudder under light pressure or heavy braking?

They shudder under both to be honest light and heavy. I was doing this to be honest putting the DSG into neutral and handbrake on but not all the time and clearly this might have cause the spots on the discs that’s causing the shuddering.

is there any known way to get rid of these hotspots? Do you think I would be able to claim to get the discs replaced under warranty from point of sale or is it new discs again job?

clearly if not much else could be causing it then it must be me causing these hot spots, I’m just surprised more people don’t have this issue.

It is generally a new discs job unfortunately, if the discs are reasonable new (which they are) you may be able to look into getting them skimmed if the warp isnt too bad but it will reduce the lifespan of the disc.

As they are about 6 months old its worth a call to brembo, they may contribute as its not within the usual life of the discs. What is the worst they can say... No!

But equally getting them skimmed may be cost prohibitive.

Just surprised more owners that of DSG Skoda don’t report this issue more often. Looks like I’ll live with it until I change or get the discs swapped over again. Must be me causing these issues rather than something more serious.

It does also tend to happen more often with 'performance' brake parts as they go to higher temperatures

My discs are the originals and they have done 72000 miles with no shuddering or warping. They will be due for a change this year but I am going to fit Skoda disc and pads again.

How do you feel you drive? Do you give the brakes a hard time when having a spirited drive?

Generally not. I drive to the system (advanced driving) and always brake early and smoothly. Never last minute unless having to do an emergency brake. Or unless the wife drives the car and forgets there isn't a clutch pedal. #whiplash 🤣

Just a thought I would also check your pads, as they might be vibrating in the caliper housing with build up of brake dust and crud on the lip where the pads slide on.
