Component Protection Active?

Recommended Posts

When I started up this morning up came a message on the screen "Component Protection Active". Never seen it before. As I drove away it disappeared to be replaced by usual navigation screen. Can anyone tell me what it is and any ideas why it should come on today?

Component protection is designed to prevent (deter) people from stealing head units. Each unit is coded to a particular vehicle and this message will come up if a head unit has been put in a different vehicle.

However, some times, there are gremlins which cause these things to happen for no reason and they go as soon as they arrive. It must be similar to the occasions when CarPlay doesn’t function for no particular reason by does when you start the car again.

Thanks Ren Man. Looking back to evening before, I was using the Skoda Connect App so might have done something! Will have to check; though not had message since.

Seen the same thing three or four times on my Octavia too, wasn't able to use the radio one morning because of it but it was back to normal again later on.

I had it again last night in my Karoq - has happened maybe 3 times in the 2 years I have owned it. I just turn the whole infotainment unit off & back on again & it clears it. Dealer told me "that just happens now & again". Like some of you have previously said - electronics can just get unusual gremlins now & then, I guess the more complex they are getting the more likely maybe? I had another issue once where the adaptive cruise control failed to work & was accompanied by a yellow triangle in the display with an exclamation mark in it. I turned off the ignition & restarted again & the problem has never occurred since. Dealer scanned the vehicle for faults during the last service & found nothing.

You have to take it to someone with an authorised GEKO account and ODIS diagnostic software - a dealership or specialist will be able to assist.

Got the same problem with Supurb 2020 except the bug is permanent. 2 trips to the dealer with no joy. They are geniunely puzzled how to fix it. It is annoying that there is no radio, no navigation and no mobile connectivity. It is a warranty issue so it won't cost us but looks like the dealer will have the car for a while.

Further to the saga. We got a message from the dealer after they'd contacted the technical office. They were advised to replace the unit.  They couldn't give a date when this would be. Yay, a summer holiday without radio, navigation, etc. The dealers sort of updated the software so now the adaptive cruise control is busted as well. I am a developer engineer so I am struggling to understand why the need to replace the computer. A computer either works or not at all. The problem is most likely software related but due some inane restrictions put on the computer one cannot simply update it. I can't fault the dealer and I still think the car is very good but it is badly let down by a very buggy computer and very bad design decisions around said computer.
