Track rod end issue.

Featured Replies

Me again.

Ok so when I had my mot I had 2 advisories the offside anti roll bar link and track/tie rod end the rubbers were degraded and would need changing at some point so came to do this today and the track rod end I used my breaker bar to crack the nut then when I tried to put the allen key in the top spline it appears it was rounded off I assume on instalation when being torqued up so Im unable to get the locking nut off as the spline spins any ideas how to resaolve this issue please ???

Use a nut splitter.

I have the ball joint splitter but I cant get the nut off as the ball joint spline keeps spinning as the allen key part has been rounded off.

Common problem, caused I think by the OEM ones having a 5.5mm Allen recess rather than the 5 or 6mm that people try.

Cut it off and replace.

Hacksaw or nut splitter.

Guess I best find where to get a nut splitter from thanks again guys :)

I put a jack under the balljoint (I use the supplied scissor jack under the ballljoint if I have the car on my trolley jack)  and apply pressure CAREFULLY which forces the balljoint taper back into the control arm allowing the nut to be slackened off.

If you can get a jack under the joint and an air gun to the nut, and try to work it back and fore it might come off. You will be worth cleaning the threads with a wire brush and use plenty of release oil.

If however the nut grips again and starts spinning the stub, get an angle grinder with a cutting disc and slot it in under the nut and cut it off. Make sure you cut the nut off and not the joint off the bottom of the taper. Release the jack and if the taper has taken a grip again, use your joint splitter as I'm sure you would figure out.

Hope this helps. I had to do mine a few weeks ago.

They're advisories; ignore them until they become failures. One one occasion I had "advisory; only 7mm tread remaining on front tyres". I'd had new fronts fitted 1_500 miles before the MoT,

I know bud but its not how I am I prefer to get stuff done before it becomes a failure on that note does anyone have the torque setting for the top nut and also for the anti roll bar bush bracket as i still have not done the drivers side and now is a perfect opportunity lol thanks in advance again :)
