New MK1 vRS owner - "General Custard"

Featured Replies

Hey all!

I always wanted one of these and so I'm happy to have picked up a yellow MK1 vRS today! It is certainly helping to brighten up a miserable day, weather wise.

It seems generally sound, but I look forward to restoring some aspects. It's all original and unmodified, from what I can tell, and I intend to keep it that way.

If there are any sage words of advice about owning a MK1, I'd welcome them. If there's a former owner or if anyone who knows this car's history, that'd be great too :).

I'm the 6th owner and 3rd in the last 12 months, I believe, so I'm hoping it's not littered with hidden issues!

A warm welcome to the community! (and by community, I mean the MK1 of course :D)

Check out the projects threads as there are a few of us who keep a diary of the progress of our MK1's. My self currently have 2 VRS's and 1 L&K Estate, Skinny has his VRS, A1TopDog is currently restoring his ex Police car back to its former glory, niceyellow vrs, Sheb and Group1RS are the most active.

Hey Dean.

Thanks for the welcome! I must admit, I'd read quite a bit of your L&K stuff before delving into the market! It's always good to learn from those more experienced.

Once I've compiled a list of issues to address, I think I'll start my own project thread too. I hope the car isn't a complete lemon (despite its colour), but gives me enough to work on with my dad to make it fun.

The transmission felt super smooth for a 124k motor and the engine seems to be operating well. Let's hope it stays that way!

Welcome to the forum.

It's good to see someone about to embark on a rolling restoration of another Mk1.  I always wanted a MK1 vRS after seeing one like yours go past me one day, way back in 2002.  I've never seen a yellow one when I've been looking to buy in the past but have always had a soft spot for the colour.

There's loads of threads about pretty much anything you want to do to the car and the search facility works well.  I also find that Google often brings me here anyway so both methods of searching usually turn up a few results.

I don't have any pearls of wisdom for you as what I want from my Mk1 is probably very different from the next person.  I bought a brand new black Mk1 vRS way back in 2006.  That car stayed pretty much standard for the six years I had it apart from an RS Tuning stage 1 map and a RARB.  My current red Mk1 is far from standard and is a very different daily to the black one.

I don't do Facebook so rely on this forum for all my advice & research.  I've been on here since 2006 and it's by far the best owners forum I've experienced with very supportive people.

Thanks, Skinny.

I think my rough plan of action with this is to;

  1. Do the immediate things. Full service and cambelt/water pump so I can run it with some assurance.
  2. Deal with body work issues. Repair sills and rusted wings.
  3. Deal with any issues that occur after I run it for a few months and ensure it doesn't suffer from any common MK1 faults.
  4. Clean, restore/replace most of the car's underneath to ensure the car lives long and prospers.
  5. After that, who knows!

All the while, I intend to keep it as original as possible, but accept that some non-OEM replacement parts might solve common issues MK1 owners have faced.

I've only had the car a few days, but I absolutely love the way it drives. I really hope I can restore it back to its former glory.
