Dashboard Warning Lights after Towbar Fitted

Featured Replies

I had a detachable towbar fitted last week with 13 pin dedicated electrics and recoding and the fitter demonstrated the electrics working correctly using his test towing lights board.

I've not driven the car until today but when I was on my way home from a 50 mile journey (not towing) I had two amber warning lights come on in the dash.  The glowplug diesel pre heat coil symbol was flashing and the ACC light was also illuminated but the car drove normally.  When I got home I stopped and restarted the car and the warning lights  went off, however a couple of miles down the road both warning lights came back on.

Not sure if this is a problem relating to the towbar fitting or just coincidence?  The only other thing done on the car since having the towbar fitted is that I've hard wired my dashcam into the rear wiper glovebox fuse using a piggy back fuse holder but I can't imagine that this could be the problem.

Has anyone experienced similar problems and if so was it associated with the towbar electrics or did you have to take it to a dealer to sort it out.

It could be as simple as the wrong coding.

Mine is the factory fitted towbar but when I had a Mk II I had one fitted after purchase and the fitting company coded it incorrectly. No lights on the dash but it didn't recognise the caravan when reversing. They had to code it a second time for it to function as expected.

I take it you've also tried unplugging the dashcam from the fusebox? Highly unlikely as you say but you never know. Whilst you're in there make sure that none of the other fuses have been knocked by accident.

Thanks for your comments, I really hope it is something as simple as recoding, I'm taking it back to the fitting centre first thing in the morning.

I haven't tried unplugging the dashcam but that's a good idea to try and also check that everything is hunky dory with the fuse box.

I have a factory build-in towbar on my new 2021 Karoq.
When I use the turn signal a control light is shown on the dashboard  "2 arrows and a buld with a number 1"
The manual shows this is a mistake with one of the turnlights on the trailer, however they function normally.
What can I do about it to solve this?  There are normal bulbs on the trailer, no leds.

If it makes you feel any better mine is the same.  Being slow I'd not even realised it was an error message, I thought it just meant it was plugged in!

Thanks ,
I had the same feeling, however in MySkoda it was reported as a trouble.

That is not ment to be an error, its just to indicate that the indicators on the trailer are also working, where does it say in the manual its an error?

In my Dutch manual on page 51

I was just looking at the same thing. I've attached a screen shot from the Superb manual, and (mine at least) seems OK as it flashes when indicating.

I read the last point there as 'if this symbol does not flash when the trailer board is hitched then one of the trailer turn signals is defective'.  ie it would normally flash if bulbs are working but doesn't flash if they are not.

The point is, if there is a sign with 1 (possibly even 2), when you are indicating, that means all is well, and that the trailer indicators are working! Its not an error light!

@BarneyMike did you get it sorted in the end?

It seems to be normal. However I do not understand that at the same time I received a fault message in the connect app MySkoda. Perhaps the dealer can read the car history.

So it's taken a week to make any progress - here's an update to the flashing Glow Plug and ACC dash warning lights.

Took the car to the tow bar fitting centre last Thursday and they tried several times to recode the dedicated wiring kit and even got an updated code from their supplier but although it seemed to code ok, when they went back in after coding, a couple of lines of code had dropped out.

They said that there were some fault codes showing on the car, one something along the lines of 'Exhaust High Temperature Sensor'.  As these didn't clear when they decoded the bar and disconnected the wiring it appeared that it was a fault with the car.  The Glow Plug warning came back on as I drove home so I contacted the dealer to arrange for them to check it out.

They couldn't look at the car until this Monday gone and  sods law the warning light went out the next time I drove the car.  When they did the diagnostic check they said that the fault codes had occurred on the day I'd been at the tow bar centre.  They cleared the codes, reset everything and test drove the car for about 40 miles and everything was good.  I asked them if they would reconnect the tow bar wiring and recode it but they wouldn't as it wasn't an approved loom.  I asked them for a price to fit and code a Skoda wiring kit and they quoted £240 for the wiring kit and another £650 to fit and code!!!

Went back to the tow bar centre this morning and they connected the car up to a remote coding centre via the internet to code the wiring.  It coded without problem and everything seems to be fine however I've only done about 25 miles so far and the warning light didn't come on after the original install until I'd done about 50 miles so I'll be driving around over the weekend to make sure all is well. I'm keeping everything crossed that it's sorted as I'm booked to go away with the caravan next Thursday

@unclerichy Well it didn't work, the same warning lights are back on the car albeit they're taking about 15 miles of driving after a restart before they reappear.

I've ordered a dedicate wiring kit from the dealership and will get them to fit and code it when it comes in.

The tow bar fitting centre have been excellent fitting me in at very short notice to try and sort the problem and are taking their wiring kit off, decoding it and refunding me the cost today.

I feel certain that the dealer will hit the same problems but hopefully they'll have the resources to finally sort it out and I can finally get down to enjoying the car and trips away in the caravan.

That's disappointing but sounds like the fitters acted decently.

Good luck with the dealer attempt

Finally the problem is sorted!

It was two weeks until the dealer could fit and code the new wiring kit. They had the car all day and when I went to pick it up they said that they'd fitted the wiring but couldn't get it to code, saying that the tow bar centre must have damaged something!

As this was Friday evening they kept the car and said they would hook it up to the UK technical centre on Monday for them to sort out.

Late in the day on Monday they said that the UK technical centre couldn't find the fault so they were going to raise the issue with the factory in Czechoslovakia.

3 days later the dealer phoned to say that the factory had managed to code it but didn't tell them what the issue had been nor how they'd resolved it.

So after a more than a month of too-ing and fro-ing between the towbar centre and the dealership, £450 for the towbar fitting, two missed caravan trips, £240 for the Skoda wiring kit and £635 fitting and coding it by the dealer, I finally have the "2021 Tow Car of the year" that I can actually tow with. 😉

Dont do that or you will invalidate the guarantee :D
