Citigo ASG rolling forward in reverse

I hope I'm posting in the right place.

 

Have had an 2014 Yeti (automatic) for about four years, which both me and my husband drive. Job relocation now means we need a second car, and we just bought a 2016 Citigo (1.0 MPI SE ASG). We've only had it a couple of days and l think I can get used to the much slower and more noticeable gear changes but getting off our driveway is freaking me out a bit! The drive slopes very slightly towards the house. The first time I took the car out, I had to reverse it out - in reverse, it kept rolling forwards. Had to out the handbrake on and really give the accelerator pedal a bit of welly. We live on a fairly busy road so reversing out onto it is best approached with caution.

 

Yesterday I drove it out forwards - in drive, it started rolling backwards. I had to put the handbrake on and, again, accelerate fairly hard to get it to move forwards.

 

Is this normal? I knew the ASG gearbox would be different to the Yeti's DSG, which is an absolute doddle to drive, but I wasn't expecting it to be this different.

 

I *think* it has hill start assist but I've read conflicting things on here - that it has to be on a fairly steep incline to kick in, hence it not working on the driveway which barely slopes at all. So far I've not dared test it out - I'll wait til I've nothing behind me!

 

My question, I suppose, is... Is it normal to need to use the handbrake to reverse out/pull out forwards from a slightly inclined slope? Do I just have to get used to it? I was assuming it would be pretty similar to drive to the Yeti and it's very different.

I have just one foot and only drive Auto's, DSG's, CVT's etc.

Driving a Citigo ASG i was like you and used the Parking / Handbrake.

I do this with most 2 pedal cars i get in until i know if the have HHC / HHA, Autohold or e-Brakes and how long they hold.

(Not always going to read the owners manual if just moving a car or borrowing and needing to get on with things.)

With the Citigo i just used the parking brake on slopes as i detected no HHA / HHC.

 

Owners / Drivers here say they have Hill Hold Assist / Hill Hold Control.

Not sure about VAG cars, but i do know from experience that lower powered cars with autoboxes allow the car to roll, as the car doesn't always have the oomph to allow for holding on the gearbox or creep when on a hill. bigger engined cars will normally have enough torque to allow for hill holding.

 

This is gained from experience over multiple makes and models :)

I think I'll get used to it - I was just expecting it to be very like the Yeti to drive and it's very different. I've been out in it today and I'm starting to get more of a feel for how it drives. I might even get to the point where the Yeti is the one that feels strange...

I have an Elegance with ASG box & find it does tend to run down drive if insufficient welly is applied. Hand brake OK, but my wife assists with a block of wood under front wheel!

Once under way the ASG is fine, esp if you keep applying welly as it goes thro the gears.

The ASG is literally an "assisted manual" device. The clutch and gear changes are worked by solenoids, under electronic control. 

 

The ASG is quite different from the majority of automatics, (DSGs aside) which use fluid torque converters instead of a friction clutch. These provide for "creep" when the unit is in "drive" or in reverse, on flat ground, and up to a point will hold a car steady on a slight incline. Conversely, an ASG only engages the clutch (to provide movement) when you press the throttle (which is sensed by the electronics), so at idle, the gearbox behaves like a manual, meaning you will need to use the handbrake on a hill, and/or be quick to press the throttle.

 

My manual car came with "hill assist" which holds the brakes for up to 2secs on a hill, to give you a chance to work the throttle & clutch without needing the handbrake - it works excellently once you've tried it a few times (inevitable in hilly Cornwall!). I'm pretty sure however, that most Citigos/Up!s/Mii's do not have this feature as standard (maybe it's just newer models).  Without it, the handbrake is a must.

Looking for some of your collective knowledge please!

 

I've have a cracking wee auto CityGo. Had it for a year now and the car hill hold function has stopped working.  For 10 months or so, the hill hold worked a charm, but it has stopped working now and I wondered if anyone knew what would be the cause?

 

Holding on the handbrake and pulling off that way is whats had to resort to. But the car should and has been doing it for us and all that extra manual labour is not welcome lol.

 

Can anyone shed some light on what to look for to fix the issue as it is actually nice to have it reinstated. Is it a manual switch/solenoid or a software issue?...

 

Its my wife's first car... and apparently its cute and nicer than any of mine! lol... but typically, this issue has happened at the most in-opportune time. She has her driving test in two weeks and it would be better if she had the hill hold function for the test. So I'm on a mission now to try and achieve that.

 

If anyone has any words of wisdom, I'd be most grateful.
