Window tints and DAB drop?

Featured Replies

Morning,

I’ve recently had the windows tinted to 20% in both my VRS and the Mrs’s Fabia Monte Carlo.  In addition to my windows I had a front Nextbase 322GW dashcam hardwired.  Since this time the Fabia has been perfect but my DAB has been a nightmare.  Anything less than crystal clear skies and I can’t get a reception.

Having looked on the forum and given the only difference in cars was the dash camera install this has subsequently been removed, everything put back to factory and the camera now sat in a draw in the house.  Unfortunately I’m still having the same issues with the DAB.

The VRS has the standard head unit from 2019 onwards, one of the rear screen amps has been changed thinking this may have got wet during tint installation but still nothing, all the window aerial lines at the top of the screen appear perfect with no breaks.

Has anyone else experienced similar from a window tint installation and any suggestions how to try and resolve matters without the film coming off.

cheers

I've no experience of this, but IIRC the DAB aerial is located in one of two places:

  1. Hatch: in the rear screen
  2. Estate: in the rear-most side windows

Is it possible that the antenna (or connections) were damaged during the tint install?

Morning,

The cars the Hatch version so it’s the top three lines on the rear screen I’m told.  The lines appear perfect which was one our the first areas the installer checked.  It’s just so strange that in good weather I get a reception, it’s as though something interfering with the signal which is why the camera was removed.  You’d think if the lines had a break in them it would be broke full stop and not the case, this does have some response when it wants.

I have noticed in the last year that DAB reception in my area (E Yorks and Humber) is particularly bad, other areas im fine, it COULD be an issue with our regional transmitter.

Hello there,

Did you forget to install the ferrite core next to wrap around the 5V DC USB feed to the Nextbase Camera?  If you don't do that, there will be electrical interference which will knacker up DAB.

Thanks

I did think that but a friend local with an estate VRS hasn’t noticed any issues and the Fabia works perfect

thanks for the suggestion, I even googled for an outage round here

Do you put it at the camera end or the power source end?

Morning,

it was the official Nextbase kit with the ferrite included.  Now it’s out of the car I’d hoped if it was this causing the issues it should of been resolved taking it out.

It’s a complete mystery.  The fitters booked the car in at ŠKODA to see if they can resolve it so I can’t fault him with trying to resolve it.

When it was taken out I saw it in the lower sill, not near the camera.

Camera end - double loop around the ferrite core and then connect up USB power to the camera.

Yeah I get that as an option, we bought extra ferrite cores to check but ended up removing the camera fully to check if this could resolved.  The DAB is still dropping without the camera in.

Okay in that case we need to look for errors on the CANBUS network. The DAB aerial feed is monitored and therefore if there is either a short or open circuit this will be reported on the 09 module.

Can OP get a VCDS or ODIS scan done and get back to us pls?

That’s perfect advice thank you, the fitter does work for the main agent and so the cars in Monday with them so will pass this on.

I’ll update Monday afternoon.

thank you

Little update:

So having been at Skoda today the cars been on the diagnostic system.  From what I understand a faults been shown and I think this was referred to as something showing an open source/ line or fault.  Apparently all the wires leading too and from the rear window appear in order and although one amplifier in the hatch lid has been changed there appear to be a second that could be at fault.

The plan at this time is to change that amp and if that doesn’t do the job then a new rear window might be required.  It’s still unknown if the tints have caused any issues of this has all just been a coincidence.

hi everyone!

it could be something so simple like the tinted windows foil has metal in it and then the whole car becomes as a big "Faraday shield". In basic english, it becomes itself as a cage were very little electromagnetic waves can get inside of it.

A friend of mine experienced something similar with a gps device. We hade the same tinted windows, but I had and external antenna. Both cars the same and my gps signal was full throttle and his almost nothing...

I would try to use an external dab antenna...

I hope that helps ;-)

Cheers!

Afternoon,

After we removed the dash cam and had the same issue we thought it could be the tint.

We’ve been onto the manufacturer and they claim there is no metallic on the film, it’s designed that way to avoid this exact problem apparently.

I’ve everything crossed for this amp been the issue on Wednesday and can finally put this problem to rest.

thanks for taking the time to contribute.

Final update (hopefully)

So the car went to the dealers today and had the a second amp in the boot lid changed and all appears well.  The codes cleared and the DABs remained on so far.

At the moment the garage are putting things down to a warranty fault that may have just been brought on by the windows been tinted or this could of just been a complete coincidence.

Thanks to those who took the time to offer any advice.

  • 1 month later...

I had a similar issues in my previous car, a BMW 5 series.

I had the windows tinted, and no issues with the DAB.

However, as soon as the Nextbase Dashcam was fitted, I lost reception to the DAB. If I turned off the dashcam, the DAB would work, so there was obviously some interference.

Since I've had the Octy VRS 230, I've done the same: tinted windows and Nextbase, but no issues with the DAB; it works absolutely fine.
