Loud Steering Creak?

Featured Replies

Hi... Recently I've been getting a few more creaks from my suspension and am aware of the thread(s) discussing this at length but this evening the creaks seem to have got worse and now happen whenever I turn the steering wheel by a reasonable amount at low speeds.  Has anyone else experienced this..?

Is it this kind of creak?

If so, it's CV boots that need spraying with some silicone grease

No, it's not like that.... Much more of a creaking noise.  Thanks for the reply though.

I have a similar loud creaking which seems to be getting worse.  Only notice it at low speeds when applying a fair bit of lock.  I had the dealer look at this a few weeks ago when it was in for a service and apparently everything was normal.  I assume they plugged it into a computer and there weren’t any faults showing.

That's exactly why I'm not planning to take it to a main dealer as if computer says no then that's good enough for them.

Yes it only happens at low speeds but does occur with only a small amount of lock.  I don't even have to be moving....it happens if I just move steering wheel while parked up.

It seems to me to be the clockspring. It’s behind the steering wheel.

luckily I had mine replaced under warranty.

if that is the creaking, it will eventually fail causing the car horn and mfsw buttons to no longer work.

Thanks, I'll look into that

I had this on our (BMW) mini, it was the suspension bottom ball joint. I don’t know whether it might be the same on a Skoda (VW) but on the  mini the bottom ball joint socket is some kind of hard nylon. The boot had perished and split letting in water and grime and the ball joint was partially seized, hence the creaking noise. New ball joint fixed it.

Anyway, worth having a close look at the suspension ball joint boots.

Thanks nick.... It seems to have stopped in the last couple of days, just the usual minor suspension creaks that I believe are associated with the ARB bushes so I will see what happens but always useful to be given a heads up to other potential causes.  Funnily enough, I did jet wash the car a couple of days before it started to I wonder if water ingress could have played a part but now dried out.
