Updating the audio

Featured Replies

So after 1500 miles and endless playing about I have decided the audio sounds pants (partly as I have blown a front speaker)

Time for a budgetish upgrade!

As I need the boot, a sub will make its way under the drivers/passengers seat, apart from accessing the cables at the back of the glovebox that looks relatively easy.

I will leave the rear speakers alone as they are pretty much turned off anyway unless the kids are in the car.

What would people recommend for the front doors? Should I go with a coaxial style speaker and ignore the tweeter at the top of the door?  That should give better imaging?

Or should I go with a component set and replace the tweeters?

Any advice more than welcome!

Can you let us know what type of Audio system you have please?  A photo of the front of the unit and also Press and Hold MENU -> Version -> Version Info - would be helpful.

Typically - the Standard Audio system setup on most Skoda's is less than ideal, however, with some very minor changes, Virtual Base and Skoda Surround can be enabled (on Bolaro, Amunsden and Columbus systems).  This massively improves the sound quality of the audio system.

How did the front speaker blow (just out of interest)?

How did the front speaker blow? Prodigy.

having listened to them extensively in the A2, I'd have to recommend a silk tweeter and I would absolutely not go for coaxials. What's the budget?

For the doors? £150 ish

For the sub? £250 ish

Hoping to power the doors from the head unit.

For the underseat sub, see here (put one in a few weeks ago, BIG improvement):

IMHO you'll get much better imaging with separate tweeters rather than coaxials.

No experience with what fits in though.

Ruddy hell. Okay...so that makes sense....You should be on software or firmware version 0478 for your Amundsen system. Anything around 0475 or earlier produces very thin sound and breaks Android Auto/Apple Carplay.

When you have replaced the speaker 🔊🔊🔊 then before you go to enormous lengths to retrofit a separate amp, if you speak with @SashaGrace
she can point you in the right direction to enable Skoda Surround. This makes an ENORMOUS difference to the audio. If it still sounds naff, then please go ahead with your amp plans!

Robs12, That looks like the way I was heading as far as the amp is concerned, how you getting on with the Kenwood??

Varaderoguy, Thank you, will contact SashaGrace and see about an update to the head unit.

As for the speaker, I had been listening to a podcast and the connection failed to my phone so the head unit switched to the radio. Must have had the volume up rather loud to hear the podcast!

My last car (focus) had a Fosgate 12" sub in the boot with an alpine amp. sounded lovely but the boot space is more important now!
