How much gearbox oil

Featured Replies

I need to change the gearbox oil on my 145,000 mile 1.6 TDI and cannot seem to find info on how much i need . I am well aware it is sealed for life by VW but still want to refresh.

Thanks Mark

Sorry no idea.   But nothing is really sealed for life and VW group seem to think a life time is 8 years or maybe untill the manufacturer's warranty expires.    I take it it is a manual box you are asking about.     A DQ200 DSG Is supposedly  Sealed for life.       Well people change the oils in them if they want and VW group did as well when service campaign '34F7' started in 2014 following a world wide recall from 2012 that excluded Europe which is not part of the world.

Ta yes manual thinking 3 litres should be enough.

Spoke to a Skoda dealer today apparently workshop tech details show it as 1.9 L

Ok drained gearbox oil today and measures approx 1 liter. So refilled and only took 1 Liter before it was coming out of filler hole. So it has done 140,000 with 1 liter and refilled with same amount. Why do Skoda quote 1.9 L and how do i get the extra .9 liter in ??.

Anyone on here know I cannot be the only one to change gearbox oil.

I know that you cannot be the only one to change gearbox oil because I also have done so in the past :)

The actual gearbox quantity and the drain quantity can vary. But I'd be surprised on a manual that this would differ by nearly a litre. It's usually torque converter autos where a lot of oil stays in the torque converter.

I think you need to find out what should be drained out and refilled.

And as for "sealed for life"... I really don't agree with this. I've always changed gearbox oil on my cars and it's always been horrible and black!

Did you have the car completely level front-to-back and side-to-side when refilling?

Yep had the car raised and used a spirit level to get it totally level. I drained it of exactly 1 liter and only took 1 liter to refill. Not sure what else to do.

Same as mine

Which transmission are you doing?.

If the DQ 200 then maybe you drainage the Mechatronic unit which holds 1L....

Dont suppose you have an oil cooler? The haynes manual is 1.8litres for the 1.9tdi. Doesn't cover the 1.6tdi but 1 litre doesnt seem right unless theres another fill point higher up or a lower drain plug?
