Anyone else had problems locating the bonding/earth connection for installation of a charger?

Featured Replies

I'm in the process of arranging the installation of a PodPoint charger, but part of the site survey they ask you to carry out requires locating a bonding/earth connection from the consumer unit to metal water or gas pipes.

If you cannot locate it they require an electrician to attend and either locate it or presumably install one.

Our house was built in 2007 so is classed as a new-build. Our consumer unit is installed on a board slightly raised off the wall so I can see behind it.

There is clearly a green & yellow earth cable coming out of the back of the consumer unit and disappearing into the cavity wall.

I've looked everywhere you might expect to find a connection like under the sink where the stop-cok (had to spell it cok because the forum thought I was being offensive, lol) is, where the gas main enters the house, in the cupboard where the central heating boiler is, but cannot find a connection anywhere.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Any clues where it might be located?

And if I can't find it can an electrician rig one or will it require installation of an earth rod?

Easiest thing is just get a local OLEV registered electrician. They are pretty much the same price, if not better as all the big companies, saves you doing all the research for them too and lots are not tied to a specific manufactures product 👍

They will sort out the grant too but as said must be OLEV to do so.

My charger installation, Andersen, didn't require this info.

I was quoted a separate earth spike for the charger.  They couldn't find anywhere to put it when they came to install the charger, and concluded they didn't need it anyway after inspecting the consumer unit.  I was refunded for it, no fuss, the next day...
