Octavia Estate whine 45-50mph in gear

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First thread and have had a search around and found similar topics but none seemingly with a clear answer or the specifics of my issue, well my wife's issue technically, with our 66 plate Octavia Estate SE Business Greenline III 1.6TDI:

  • When in 4th gear specifically, between 45 and 52mph there is a noticable "whine" that seems to come from the passenger side of the car
    • At the same revs and/or speed in all other gears except 5th the noise is not present, its sort of there in 5th but very very faint
    • Depressing the clutch makes the noise stop instantly
    • Harshly accelerating through this speed range (e.g from 40->70) does not create the noise
    • Gently accelerating in this range or being in the range with no throttle input the noise can be heard

We've had the car since 50k miles about 18 months ago (on 60k now)and from memory it was there since we got it from a main dealer, it went back for other issues (electric windows stopped working) and mentioned it at time and was met with a not particularly helpful answer of "yeah they can do that, can be a lot of things" but as our daughter had just been born 3 months premature I didn't have time to press the issue. To me it hasnt got any worse nor has there been any driveability issues but my wife says its getting worse and she drives it a lot more than I so looking for hints on where to problem solve.

Other threads mentioned:

- Loose/cracked airbox, checked that and its fine

- Gearbox oil, had major service by dealer before we picked up, unsure if that covered gearbox oil

- Tyre wear, rear OS is at 3mm on MOT but seems weird to be that if it goes away with clutch?

- Bearings?

Thanks for reading

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me

Sorry just fully read the post... probably not

If depressing the clutch makes it go away, then that is likely to point to the problem. A resonance at a light acceleration may not be heard during a heavy load for many reasons. Maybe release bearing? It could be the actual clutch. Not sure if your car has the DMF.

Clutch release bearings or possibly even the Dual Mass Flywheel.  Sorry - both a pain to get replaced (and expensive).  If you are going to have that work done, always put in a new clutch and clutch plates.

Hello!

Did this issue be sorted out? I've kinda same problems with 1.6 cr 6-speed greenline 2015: at approx  50mph but also at 25mph can easily be heard whining with constant speed and engine/powertrain on light load. When decreasing or accelerating speed rapidly cannot be heard anything.. I've thought it is some kind of resonance or differential or secondary axle bearing... The noise is also almost same kind with every reasonable gear being used (3, 4, 5 at ~50mph) but 6th makes other resonances because of extra low revs tho so cant say properly about it. However, the noise is really whining or whizing, so dmf wouldnt be my first choise (?)

The car is mostly new to me, have driven it about 3k kms. 193k kms driven car. Just did cam belt change and oils in engine and gearbox (febi, recommended)
