What stock turbo is in the VRS TDI 184?

Featured Replies

As per subject, just wondering what the stock turbo is in the VRS TDI 184? Is it the IS20 as per the petrol engine or different because it's diesel?

Thanks

It is a Garrett GTD1449VZ

Thanks, am I right in thinking there are fewer options for diesel turbo upgrades than petrol?

The engine does not lend itself well to tuning.  The most that has been made in the UK so far is 286bhp. But that is with a lot of money spent,  new turbo, fuel pump etc. You can get a remap which will take you to around 210 to 220bhp max. That is about where the turbo maxes out.

Intake wise you can fit an mqb blanking plate to cover the hole on the back of the inlet pipe.

Remove the snow grate and open up the hole on the left side of the intake. If you google pikey R600 mod it will become clear. Filter wise the standard paper filter supplies more than enough air for a modded 286bhp car and also the same filter supplies the Golf R with a lot more hp. So not worth changing to anything else unless you want extra intake noise. You can fit better chargepipes  from Darkside Performance which gives about 5bhp and helps the engine breathe better during acceleration. They are only £180.

You can get a silicone turbo to airbox pipe but that is really just for aesthetics as they don't offer any flow increase over the standard pipe.

Some people have the dpf removed and egr blanked but it is pointless if you ask me. You still have a catalytic converter fitted before the dpf and straight after the turbocharger, to me that is more restrictive than the dpf. When mine has issues I will just get it cleaned.

If you take a look on Darkside Developments they have a page purely on what was done modding the CUNA engine.

Thanks, that's some really helpful info and very comprehensive!

I've already looked at getting a stage 1 remap so I think I will go with that for now. I bought the car for fuel efficiency / space / poke so was always going to be a bit of a compromise, but still much faster than any other car i've had!
