Stop Start doesn't deactivate

Featured Replies

Hello, Can anybody enlighten me as to what I might be doing wrong or may be wrong with this function.

It seems to go in to stop/start mode all the time and even while still rolling to a junction,  albeit slowly, I haven't even come to a dead stop here.

In the city it can get tedious so i would like to switch it off.

Many thanks

I have, both lit and unlit modes there is no difference.

You must have a fault with it then.  I have to deactivate start/stop a lot in London as it's too slow to respond, so know full well it completely deactivates START/STOP if depressed (light on).  Saying that I just replaced my glow plugs early, well they were still functioning, and this has helped the speed at which the system works.

I felt it was a fault. It's booked in to the dealer next week to be looked at.

Wanted real users thoughts/confirmation, unless I was missing a trick.

Don't confuse the auto hold button with the stop start button. Both labelled with an A. On RHD cars the stop start button is on the right of the gear lever

I think your right xman and I was pressing the wrong one.

This morning I pressed the other one (on right of gear lever and below the Mode) with confidence and it seemed to do it, however without looking down it had turned the button illumination off.

Need a bit more learning time, than the week so far,  with this very intelligent car.

Loving the car though.

Don't see why anyone has a problem with stop-start, had it in three cars over 9 years.  At traffic lights you can anticipate the traffic moving and put the car into gear - guess what, it starts.  Same in stop start traffic!  Can be faster away from the lights than the boy racers who have kept the car in gear slipping the clutch!

Now if you chose DSG . . . . . . real drivers have manual gearboxes:biggrin:

The stop/start function defaults to active everytime you start the car (from ignition off/on) and so the button is initially not illuminated. You therefore have to switch it off (button illuminated) after you start the car and set off on your journey. If you turn the engine off, you go back to square one. Annoyance due to EU regs.

BTW Autohold does remember its setting, so you can have it permanently on or off. Its important to appreciate what autohold does, so don't just turn it on and off randomly without realising the consequences. You may find your car rolling backwards unexpectedly!

Thank every much. Hopefully it was just me being a dud.

As always these things are a personal preference. I do not like stop/start, as it feels very destructive to the vehicle components, battery, starter etc. But more importantly for me it feels like its stalling out all the time. Not a pleasure.

Thanks all for your time.

Well, it's your choice. I've got a mate who's a taxi driver and reckons it's worth 5mpg on a Superb TDi in town driving. 80_000 miles in 3 years and the only part he's had to replace is the battery.

Dubious claim for a diesel which uses very little fuel at idle (as low as 0.3l/hr for a 1.6tdi). If it was a petrol engine I would be more inclined to believe it.

The taxi driver probably has no real idea if what he claims is true if he hasn't scientifically compared long term results with and without s/s under controlled conditions (similar journeys, similar conditions, routes, weather, load etc etc).

Confirmation bias at play.

I estimate SS worth around 2-3 MPG on my 8 mile commute. Plus helping to live-up to the £30 VED band.

Start-stop proves the futility of using cars on short town journeys that's for sure!

A lovely succinct input.

Well done `xman`

I disagree, allows me a little time until hydrogen fuel cells become a practicality.

Just like fusion reactors?

I think fuel cells may be a little closer - also not keen about sitting next to what is effectively a H-bomb on a leash.

Where is the U235 coming from, to get into the car?

From the fusion reactor that Xman compares with hydrogen fuel cells.
