Blue car cambelt and service

Featured Replies

Took the derv vRS to the garage for oil & filter, fuel filter and cambelt /water pump (we'd already done the air and cabin filters)

Prior to taking it in, power had dropped off at 3500rpm and we didn't know why..

This may now be resolved, at least partially, which is nice.

Swmbo says it feels like an entirely different car.

Since we had no history, had the cambelt and water pump done too.

Meknic said the belt didn't look that old but a tensioner bolt was very loose - and that it wasn't the first time he'd encountered this.

A lucky escape??

Anyone else heard of this with the BMN engine?

Also, what we thought may have been a wheel bearing on its way out is more likely to be a deformed tyre.

Still got the abs module to sort - it's going to have to wait a bit.

Hi,

Yep happened to me last year after I did my cam belt and pump, the tensioner stud stripped in the head, result pistons just kissed the valves (inlet), just enough to leave marks in the carbon, head off and helicoil the head, all good now.

According to Honest John, it's a common problem after 3-4 changes.

My car is a 2007 VRS TDI BMN

Hope this helps,

Thanks mate..

Another quickie, if I may..

Does yours pull all the way to the red line?

This car goes flat at 3500rpm and we see no reason why..

It's supposed to have been remapped so we're thinking it may be that (in the absence of an obvious alternative)..

Yeah mine pulls like a train.

Road was a bit wet the other day and I got wheelspin in 3 rd gear it's never done that before.

Shame your not closer, we could compare cars?

BMN you say...?   Does it have the original inlet manifold with swirl flaps?  If so, at that age it's most likely well and truly knackered.  The flaps stick and break up.  In extremis, they get sucked into the inlet with disastrous results.  Also, the spindle bushes at each end of the manifold wear and leak oil and boost pressure.

The cure is to replace the manifold with a BKD one, without the flaps.   You can either source one from a breaker and get the required gasket and bolts or buy the complete kit from Darkside Developments.   https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/ppd170-used-bkd-aluminium-inlet-manifold-conversion-kit.html

I'd guess its original...

Looks an easy DIY job (we're ok at spannering, just had to ease off due to getting older and more informer)..

In the process, it'd be wise to clean the EGR and ASV.  I know the feeling about getting older and more infirm.  At 68, I gave up lying under cars and poking under bonnets a good few years ago.

Can I get a terraclean (or similar) to do that for me?

I recently ish did inlet and egr cleans on a passat and golf 4 (both pd130s) and hated it.

The passat was a little more fun since I used fire to burn all the rubbish out (and who doesn't like playing with fire eh?)

She's in her 40s (ex mechanic) with back and hip issues, I'm mid 50s with a knackered elbow and back problems..

I was thinking of getting a decent creeper, see if that would help..

I don't think Terraclean or CarbonClean would look at it.  This was the state of my Golf 170 TDI  at 9 years old and c. 75K hard driven miles.
