Noise While Braking

Hi All, after getting my first Skoda Octavia Estate, I have noticed that there is a noise when depressing the brake pedal. Anyone who has done as many brake jobs as I have, would instantly recognise the sound of metal against metal....i.e. brake pads worn completely bare...so metal pad pressing against metal brake disc.

 

No worries I thought...so took off three wheels and calipers one by one and checked 'everything'...couldn't find anything wrong:

 

  • More than 50% meat left on all the pads.
  • Jacked up, wheel rotates without noise...smoothly.
  • Rear disk plate not bent or touching the discs.
  • Front and back of the disks looks fine to me..small lip on outer edge but nothing that would bother me.
  • Removed calipers and pads and did 'Rolls Royce' refitting - detailed inspection and cleaning, copper grease etc.
  • Checked for anything stuck between pads and discs - nothing.
  • Checked over whole of wheel arch / suspension and couldn't find anything out of place....just as expected for < 30K miles on the clock.

 

After refiting the noise is still there....only when I press the brake pedal, at any speed and no difference whether cornering or not. If I am pressed I would say it's coming from the front of the car....hence I was lazy and left one rear wheel unchecked.

 

 

I really tried not to post this question - almost as a matter of pride -  as I have never had a brake job in 30 years defeat me.

 

Any ideas would be much appreciated - hopefully it's something I have missed - maybe the years are catching up with me :-)

Does it have anti-squeal shim fitted?

Did you Copaslip the backplates when reassembling? (I figure this sometimes works for no obvious reason)

Yes and Yes....I re-fitted paying special attention to all the contact points...the thing I can't get over is that it has that metal on metal sound - it's very distinctive. 

Sod's law it will be the wheel you haven't checked.:D

Yep - you could be right. It's just when you've had 3 wheels off....and back on again and you can't find a single thing wrong....although I did find something wrong with the wheels.

 

They use bolts instead of nuts !!!!! So trying to hold the wheel in the air and align it with a bolt hole and get the bolt started is a real PITA :-(

 

....going to have to buy or make a wheel alignment tool and stick it in the boot!

Recently had a similar issue, with a noise coming from the front brakes. Had a  quick check, and found the front discs slightly worn, but showing some rust, due to covid the car has not been used much. So, full front brake overall, new pads, new discs, hub cleaned to a mirror finish, guide pins cleaned and lubricated, and... no improvement. Fed up with it now, so put it ino the local garage. Turns out it was a sticking rear caliper! I was convinced the noise was coming from the front, so I would check the other rear wheel for peace of mind.

Thanks Sherrif - it's probably Sod's Law - like Ords said - it will be the only wheel I haven't removed and checked - and like you mention, it's the one at the back I haven't checked, because I could swear the noise is comming from the front!

 

Must be old age or lack of Glenfiddich !

I'm the same, and I don't drink.

The scraping noise is most likely from the brake protection shields that are made out of russian steel....you'll find one of the fasteners for the backplate has broken and is scraping metal/metal when braking.  Wiggle the backplates on RSF and FSR and see which one is loose.
