Dear All - i have SKODA OCTAVIA MK2 2010 model. I am from India, i had flat battery and recharged and cooked up to the car and started for running at idle. it was running fine and all ok. i went away from the car and in some time i heard a rough idle from the car and hearing the radiator kicking off to rotate with huge sound and the car stopped.

 

i checked the battery, its fine, the fuel pressure and flow is fine at both inlet side and at the HPP side. i have not checked the compression yet, however the car is not starting at all. its crank well but not starting.

 

the radiator is keeps running when ever i switch on the ignition but not started the car. i checked the coolant temperature seasons G62 and on radiator line and its good.

 

my next check is to check the thermostat and the speed sensor, compression. 

 

is there anyother check i need to do to narrow down the issue? please help. no engine module error in VCDS.

Oil level.

ECU fuses (both in car and the battery fuses).

Dear Ken - thanks for your response. let me check that tomorrow and confirm. the fuses in the engine comportment were already checked with test light and all ok. but i have not checked near to the driver seat under the dashboard. can you please help me the fuse number for ECU? i have not checked the relay on the fuse tray in the engine comportment.

 

also if the fuse to the ECU is blown, will the VCDS able to collect the logs that i pasted above? 

 

oil level is within the limit and good. just before the high mark and it was replaced just few mile before.

Disconnect the battery negative lead.

 

Turn ignition on and switch on lights/hazard/horn to drain residual charge.

 

Switch everything off but leave ignition on.

 

Reconnect battery negative, switch ignition off then retry.

Dear All  - i did checked the compression of the cylinder and it clocks 21 bar in all four cylinders. glow plugs are good, the fuses are good in engine comportment. oil level is good. below is my full auto scan from vcds. the car is still not starting. the air filter is clean, the fuel pump is clocking .5 pressure and flow is also good. i have not checked the injector yet. is there anything expert advice to check please help. the car is not starting yet and cranking well.

Perhaps the immobiliser is active, can you try removing the air intake pipe and spray a small amount of EZ-START/WD-40 or similar into it to see if it will offer?

 

I don't think anything mechanical is bad but doing the above test will at least show if mechanicals are okay.

 

If there was an electrical problem with the injectors like a broken ground wire affecting all of them I would expect that to show up on a scan, I'm still thinking immobiliser due to battery change.

 

If you've tried everything just fully disconnect the battery and leave overnight before retrying.

Dear Sir - i kept the battery negative terminal removed because the battery gets drained for safety. that could be the reason for immobiliser is active. let me do the test as you instructed and confirm sir. thanks for your help and if there anything else that i need to check please help me sir. thanks in advance and have a great day.

 

 

A couple of questions:

 

1. Does the alarm sound if you lock the car with the key remote then open the door with the key in the door?

 

If you don't hear anything and the hazard lights are flashing meaning the alarm has been triggered, it could be the alarm module is faulty due to a leaking internal battery which is draining the main car battery.

 

2. Does the radiator fan still spin whenever the ignition is switched on?

 

Could be the electronics are still corrupt after the battery change rather than anything physically being wrong and further attempts to "reset" things are required.

thanks Mic. i will check that too but if i remove the G83 and G62 coolant sensors, the the temperature needle is coming back to center, in the cold condition howcome the needle can be in middle or in the extreme right. also the radiator fan is stopped when i remove the sensors.

 

will there be any connection in this? the door modules are removed including the lock barrel and central electonics for service

 

will that be have any impact to immobilizer to be active? if thats the case too, the engine should not crank right and starter is running that means it gets the power. what is the fuse to the HPP inside the engine comportment? can you please help and advise.

can you also suggest the fuse holder layouts if you have for this engine? all the fuses i checked in engine comportment and all ok but i yet to check the one inside the car. 

 

do you find any reason as why the temperature needle in the cluster is going extreme end into red and comes back to center if i remove the coolant temperature sensors and the radiator fans stops running otherwise it runs as soon as i put the key in and turn it and the needle is going to red. this is happens in the very cool temperature or stands still of the engine.

If the electronics have been corrupted due to low battery voltage/changeover spikes anything is possible.  Think how often modern digital electronics/software/firmware go bad requiring a reset/reflash instead of older analogue electronics which always worked until something physical failed.  Maybe this is causing the abnormal instrument behaviour and not a physical component or wiring.

 

The fuses inside the car will vary depending on model and equipment.  If the car ran fine before  I would just remove and check what is already there.

 

Perhaps you could also check the wire continuity between the sensors and where they go to, also for shorting as they may have chaffed on something.  It is a long and awkward job and just because wires are inside a black plastic sleeve doesn't mean they can't fail, just they are hidden from view.

Sir - let me try to capture the live fuel rail pressure what is clocking while cranking the engine to see whats going on. can you please help how to do this in UDS protocol ECM? the options in VCDS are limited for these protocol ECM

Well, it's not cheap, but you get more options in a registered copy of VCDS than in the plain download, and more again in the full paid version.

Hi Dear all i have paid version of VCDS and found the way how to measure the fuel rail pressure live. the issue is this CAR ECM us UDS and test options are very limited in VCDS.

 

the VCDS did not identified the fuel pump issues and intermediate operation. i need to clock the pressure contineously.

Dear Sir - i was away for while due to various medical reason, i just back and checked the complete car mechanical part, circuits etc. the car is still not starting and when i checked the compression its perfect, the fuel from the fuel tank and the electrical pump are perfect. but the fuel is not coming out from the high pressure pump. i removed the metering devices and tried to check whether the signals are comping in the metering device by cranking, the car is started that means when I remove the metering device and not connected to the HPP the car is starting. do you have any idea why is this sir? your advice will be must helpful.

hi Sir - today i tried with VCDS and if i remove the metering device the VCDS is catching up the same and reports the N290 is open circuit. if i connect it back the error is goes away. the car starts only if i remove the meter devices connectivity and hangs off if i connect it back. if i remove it the VCDS is saying fuel high pressure and shutting the engine after some time.

 

so will that be a metering device issue. and i wanted to confirm before i replace it. is there a way that i can check the metering device for fault? please help.

Dear All - hope all should be having great weekends. problem statement is my car is not starting. it had flat battery and was standing for a while on flat battery. I recharged them and connected it back and the car started fine, it was running fine for 15 minutes and then stopped and from then never starts again. i checked the following

1. battery terminal voltage - 12.5 and above and good
2. compression test on cylinder - all ok as per factory manual
3. fuel from tank pressure and flow is ok
4. fuel delivery from electric pump to HPP is good and pressure is perfect as per factory manual

so i suspected the HPP and removed the delivery line of HPP that goes to injection units distribution and found no fuel coming. i though it could be HPP issue and traced all the fuses, cables relays etc both in cabin, in engine comportment, all perfect. however the HPP is not sending fuel. so i removed the N290 fuel dosing (metering device) from the HPP to check the signals, and cranked the car without the metering device connected to HPP, the car started running fine. it run for quite a while and stopped after some time saying the fuel pressure is too high in VCDS. also the vcds is reporting the N290 valve is open circuit because it was not connected. if i connect it back to HPP and the car is not at all starting, it cranks well and the VCDS is not reporting any error in the engine module. below is my scan report. is there any expert advice that i you share to check ? how do i check the metering device whether this is faulty? i do not want to buy a new one to replace them before confirming thats the issue. its very expensive here in India and please help. below is my vcds scan report.

how do i get the freeze frame data using the VCDS?

hi All good morning and hope all should be doing great. while i am waiting for some expert advise from you i continued my investigation and following is my observation. this metering device N290 is normally open solenoid valve and if you give the signal, the valve closes. so if i remove the signal connectors the valve is in open condition and allows more fuel to the rail and VCDS reports fuel high pressure and shuts the car. if i connect the supply connectors back to this valve the valve closes and no fuel to rail and car is not starting. short story short, i yet to trace the cable from the valve to the fuse holders but i checked all the fuses. all i need how will the ECM controls this valve, technically the ECM closes the valve when the fuel pressure is high and more fuel comes and so on. i think it take the input from G247 fuel pressure sensor on the distributor and also the fuel pressure regulator N276 which builds and release the pressure as needed. I checked the return fuel pip for clogging and its free. but engine module in VCDS is not reporting any error other than the coolant temperature is very high if i connect the coolant temperature sensor in the radiator outlet G83 and in the coolant inlet connects to the block G62 and because of this the temperature sensor reading in the dashboard insert is showing extreme red. I yet to check the Oil level and oil temperature sender - G266 under the engine block cover and yet to trace these cables back to fuse tray for any rat bites. is there any  other technical advise please help me. i am trying to fix this over this weekend please help. appreciate all your help in advance 

N290 has a 12V feed (blue/red wire, from engine bay fuse 14) on pin 2, and pin 1 goes to engine ECU pin 60, with a blue/black wire. I imagine this connection is PWM controlled inside the ECU to vary the solenoid valve opening/closing amount. If that blue/black wire is short-circuit to chassis/engine metalwork somewhere, the valve will be 100% closed.

Similarly, a short circuit to ground/0V on the wiring to either G61 or G83 may be causing the ECU to wrongly conclude that there is a very high temperature in the cooling system.

Look for areas that wiring may have rubbed on metal parts.
