Camera & tow bar wiring install at same time - poss a bad idea… any help appreciated.

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have a 2017 hatch sportline, fancied a reverse camera, but decided I would install at the same time as a proper wiring kit for tow bar (7 pin).

I have both kits fully wired up now, but have a lot of issues! Not sure if I can code them all out or not… I have OBDII.

the tow bar wiring is working, I.e. light board works fine.
but there is nothing showing camera is operational, my park assist is totally disabled. Although I note from moving the car, that the sensors are operational, just no display.

My infotainment unit seems to be dimmer than usual, and i can’t access anything in car settings menu, I.e. tyre presssures, etc.

lots of fault codes, when trying to code everything in, I seemed to be missing some of the modules detailed in the guides. Not sure if this is a discrepancy between vcds  and OBDII…

anyone experience doing either of these installs with OBDII can help me out at all? My first direction tomorrow is to in-wire the camera, and see if I can get everything cleared back to usual with just the tow bar wiring installed. (Hoping this is ok due to lights operating as should….🤞)

many thanks for any help

Marc

To start with, what software are you using to do the coding.

have you double checked your wiring to make sure no canbus wires are in the wrong places.

And did you take a before and after full vehicle scan and admap file.

what fault codes have you got?

also, would be ideal if you could tell us exactly what you changed so we can find the issue.

Hey ApertureS.

I have OBDII, OBDeleven. I’ve double checked the wiring for the camera, and all looks good. The tow bar wiring is a bit deeper, but as mentioned I have lights working, so thinking this is ok.

I have a before scan, and have taken one after with all the faults. Not sure what and admap file is?

fault codes are….

U112300 - Databus error value received static (01 Engine

U042800 - Invalid Data Received From Steering Angle Sensor Module Intermittent  (01 Engine)

B116816 - Steering angle sensor Voltage too low Intermittent (03 Brakes)

C114602 - Tire pressure monitoring display Signal error Intermittent (03 Brakes)

U112200 - Databus implausible message Intermittent  (13 ACC)
U112300 - Databus error value received Intermittent  (13 ACC & 76 Parking Ass)
U101400 - Control module incorrectly coded static (13 ACC)
U112100 - Databus missing message static (13 ACC)

U111000 - Function restriction due to communication interruption static (17 Dashboard)

U104C00 - Rearview camera system control module No communication static (19 Gateway)

U105400 - Information electronics control module 1 No Communication static (19 Gateway)

B1168F2 - Steering angle sensor no initialization Intermittent (44 Steering Assistance)

quite a few…. 😬

I looked to follow the instructions, but appeared to be missing some of the modules… I was expecting them, to be accessible once enabled in other sections, I.e. 6C rear view camera. But I could not access this module to follow the full instructions.

I will pull the instructions / what I changed tomorrow and post.

cheers.

Yeah you’ve made a bit of a mess of all your coding there, module 13 and 19 should not be faulting like that unless you messed around with coding. Obd11 is not really amazing for long coding, really you need VCDS. And if you can’t access 6C then you won’t have a way to code it at all

seems you have also had the battery disconnected so make sure to start the car; slowly turn the steering full lock to full lock till the light goes out, then restart the car followed by a fault code clear.

Hey ApertureS.

Thanks for reply, yeah, I do seem to be tangled up a bit here… and am now seeing the shortcomings of obd11. I used vcds around 10 years ago, but it lapsed and I was struggling to justify buying the new version when I went for the obd11 year ago or so, normally just basic code reading with a few minor changes. Until now has served me well…

I've had another go through modules… and have managed to get no lights on dash, so at least I am making baby steps in the right direction. 😬 took the car out and ACC is working as it should. I activated ‘control module for towing sensor’ in module 13. Still showing faults during scan though.

My main issue/worry now is the multimedia unit does not turn on/off with ignition, and most functions are not operational. So there I believe there must be a wiring issue, going to disconnect camera and see if I can get back to 100% and start again… unless anyone has any suggestions that this could be a coding issue.

I can access 6c or 5f which I think is causing me the issues…

cheers for help

Sorry, I can’t access 6c or 5f.

6c and 5f are both on the convinience canbus network, where did you tap into your 2 wires for the reverse camera canbus? cause you may of got them either in the wrong place or shorted the canbus network out.

And are you sure control module for towing sensor is what you have? As i may be wrong but i believe that to be a swivel tow bar that is used to sense the angle it is at.

Really you need to start again, pull the wiring and reset your coding and go slowly 1 thing at a time. Drop me a pm if you need help.

Something else worth adding, the Uxxxx fault codes are only half the actual fault, only paid for vcds or odis will give you a much more precise description of what the U fault is.

see the attached photo, 3 things with the same fault code, but all with different actual faults.E0F6167C-84B4-4DC0-96AF-CD7B9E7F074C.jpeg.49875473e77ffb8a19a220ac85201a8d.jpeg

Hey ApertureS,

thanks for info. Apologies, for delay in coming back to you. I got another look at the car Monday night, decided to disconnect all the wiring for the camera.

Once I removed the coding that I had done for the camera, I am back to being fault free. So seems the tow bar wiring is ok. 🙏

I think there might be something wrong with the wiring I have for the camera, which I guess would explain the faulting modules when there was nothing changed in them. The wires removed from the back of the media unit to merge the camera in, appear to swap colour when linked back in…. Going to put a post in some of the camera chats and see if anyone has seen something similar… need to get the time to have a good look through these posts….

but for now, I thankfully have a fault free car, it’s going in for a new starter button Friday, so that’s a relief!

cheers

I had a new ignition button on mine too, failed on me,

it sounds like I said, your canbus wires are either in the wrong place or the wrong way round. If the kit is good quality then the colours should match up with no issues.
