Bolero sound system in 2015 Octavia - why such a big

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've just traded my old 2005 Octavia for a 2015 model. It's very nice, and I'm sure I'm going to like it.
One weird thing about the new one is the sound system. It has a Bolero system installed. It's an improvement in that USB, Aux and SD sockets are already fitted and accessible, and it can connect to a Bluetooth device too.
One thing that puzzles me though is the huge "external module" box in the glove compartment. It's the shape and size of a standard PC CD player, but appears to have no drawer for a CD, just the teeny SD card slot. It seems such a large box for that purpose, even assuming it houses additional circuitry for the radio etc. The manual does not mention CDs at all.
I wonder if the box has been designed so that a CD player can be fitted in its place?
It's not a problem if it won't play CDs, but I'm curious.

(Sorry, I only half-wrote the topic title!)

The part in the glove box is the headunit/radio, it contains everything apart from the display/touchscreen.

Depending on spec, some cars did have a CD player in the glovebox unit but many don't . As it's a modular system, they will all be the same size regardless of whether a CD player is actually fitted inside the box.

Thanks for the info.
Interestingly, I thought the sound was OK from this system, but yesterday we tried playing some of my partner's favourite music on it - Muse. She suddenly announced that the sound quality was bloody awful. To my ears, most Muse is incredibly badly produced with some questionable decisions made about distortion, tone and so on (not to mention the modern mania for having everything maxxed-out all the time, to leave the listener shell-shocked), so to me it didn't sound any worse than normal.
The day before, I'd tried Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" with the car stationary on the drive, and it sounded great!
I think I need to test it out with more 70s-produced music. Hmm. . . War of The Worlds, Deep Purple, Yes, Genesis, Rainbow, Jethro Tull. That'll do for starters. . . :¬)

Okay - first things first:

1) Get your Bolero system to the latest firmware (your 2015 may well be a SOP2.x or SOP3.x hardware).  Press and Hold MENU -> Go to Software/Versions and press the versions button at the top of the screen.  Then contact @pab567 who can arrange to get the latest firmware to you.

2) Get Skoda Surround enabled on your Bolero.  It will transform the audio.
