Engine oil - Octavia iV PHEV

Recommended Posts

Just about to go on a tour up the east coast of Scotland and I want to take a litre of oil with me (on the basis of if I take it I won't need it...).  The manual, helpful as ever, says this about engine oil -

  1. Ask a specialist garage for the correct engine oil specification for your vehicle.

If no oil of the correct specification is available, max. 0.5 l of oil with the following specifications may be used until the next oil change:

    ▶ VW 504 00, VW 508 00, ACEA C3, ACEA C5

Can anyone tell me the correct specification?

The correct spec as from the factory and recommended by VW / Skoda is VW 508 00 / 509 00, so that is 0w 20 FS IV.     But then the 1.4 TSI in the PHEV is supposed to have fixed oil ,filter service intervals so at 9,400 miles / 372 days.      Some dealerships might think the old spec VW 504 / 507 so 5w 30 FS III is ok to use.   That is not the recommended oil even though that and the 0w 20 are long life oils.  Some will be using 0w 30 FS III as they are on other TSI.s.

Thanks for that prompt response. I am aware of the fixed oil & service intervals but I find it hard to break the previous Caterham/Morgan mentality of touring with loads of spares, tools & fluids. All of which should be un-necessary with a new car. Anyway, VW / Skoda VW 508 00 / 509 00 noted, thank you.

@Sir_Ron_Norris How many miles has the car done now and has the oil level dropped any since the hand over?

Had you dipped it cold and then at operating temp when you got the car?

How are you using it in on Electric only for short trips and how often is the Engine fired up and running and the oil / engine getting up to the normal operating temp?

  • 1974 miles.
  • No oil level drop.
  • Dipped cold/hot - No. Cold only.

We used the car initially for short trips in the default Electric mode only but (and you may recall correspondence in these pages about the 12v battery going flat) we now use it always in Hybrid mode and in S-drive. IC engine always kicking in and out, impressive energy regeneration and long-term mpg of 88.2.

Engine oil consumption is not problem, or even a concern. Simply the stupid manual tells me that, should I need oil, I must have a specialist grade - but is imprecise as to what that grade should be.

In Simply Clever language.

VW Group had to meet the WLTP / RDE and now RDE2 results showing low emissions and no low Average Emissions.

So as well as engine changes / software etc and electrification the engines got 0w 20 FS IV from the factory.

Seeing as the 1.4 TSI managed the lower emissions by becoming a Plug In Hybrid the oil filled at the factory might not be such an important thing

when it comes to running Oil as long as it meets the Spec for a 1.4 TSI.

Some might go with VW 508 00 / 509 00 as recommended, some might go VW 504 00 / 507 00 as perfectly fine.

I would say if i had one as a keeper,

stuff that for a game of soldiers and i will just use VW502 00 so 5w 40 FS as i am doing Fixed Oil & Filter changes anyway, the fuel consumption will be fine in the UK.

Limited engine running many days with electric use only, and 'What is the worst that can happen'.  The 1.4 TSI 150 ps without ACT is a tried and tested design.

This below is not recent, but will do as far as i am concerned.  Skoda UK / Dealership Employees & others might well disagree.

That is for Petrol Engines on Variable / Flexible service intervals, not for Petrol / TSI's on Fixed / Annual Oil & Filter Changes.
