Looks pukker in black!

and, unlike the macbook pro, it won't cook your unmentionables, whine terribly and just generally be a bit flakey.

why?

because its made by Asus, as opposed to some company called "Quanta" whos website hasn't been touched in three years........

Quanta have always made Apple's laptops haven't they?

The heat is due to the dual-core intel isn't it?

Still its £200 extra to buy in the UK than the USA, ripoff england !

I love the way that for years apple claimed that their processors were more efficient than intel ones and all of a sudden they have changed their minds

I don't know. All I know is that interior shots of Macbook Pro's look like they've been assembled by a a very poorly trained chimp, or a someone with a very low grasp of thermal physics.

It seems unlikely that any outfit capable of building a laptop would seriously put thumbnail sized blobs of cheap thermal compound over cpu cores.

The heat is due to the dual-core intel isn't it?

This could be suggested to be true, but other manufacturers (Acer, Sony and many more now) are all shipping dual core laptops - I don't see them getting any bad press over the heat - or cold it be that as PC Users, we're more attuned to it and less likely to get shirty about it?

Even so, CPU core temps approaching the dead-zone are just plain unacceptable. I push my 1.7ghz centrino to it's very limits for hour on end, it's never even reached 70 on the core.....

Still its

Its such a shame that the mac book has an integrated GFX card so cant run aperture :(

i would love one

Education discounts take the sting out of that.

what 6%?

well, i dunno.

All i know is that on friday i was quoted £2253 for a 17" Pro with 3 year cover...by an authorised reseller reading off an official apple retail pricelist.

And today via education, a shade over £1600.......

Do you have any experience of using Darwine? Looking at getting the only windows app I use working, Microsoft Money 2002... Heard quicken is rubbish!

Never used Darwine tbh.

I just loaded up the Bootcamp beta on my MacMini (which apart from being a teensy bit slower, seems to be identical specs) and shoved a copy of XP Pro with SP2 on it to run my Windows apps/gaming requirements.......

I'll check out the black macbook specifics tomorrow, but our young tech was checking it out today and I seem to remember the figure of a totally stock machine coming in at

I love the way that for years apple claimed that their processors were more efficient than intel ones and all of a sudden they have changed their minds

Years ago (late 90's?) they were more efficient; then the PowerPC development slowed to a crawl & Intel went sailing past. The G5 chip was superb when introduced but there wasn't any real development planned or carried out, so Intel pulled away again.

As the chip manufacturer is pretty much irrelevant to the end user Apple took the "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach. Mac's are now (generally) as fast as PC's again + you can run Windows if you want.

Everybody wins.

( Disclaimer: I am a Mac zealot & love is blind! ;) )

Mac zealot is nothing bad and its the OS that makes a mac not whats inside. we can all admit that ;)
