Steering rack

Recommended Posts

Hi guys have just bought a new project a 2010 fabia 1.6 tdi cr90 estate and was wondering if anyone knew the part number for a new /recon steering rack as I gather there are three different types any help would be most appreciated. Very happy with the motor at the moment just wanted a car to get me round the doors and be able to carry some gear she’s an ex taxi so has a fair few miles on her 237017 and counting so I’m sure I will be back here for help with any  future problems.I know it’s a bit daft but I always wanted a car with over 200k miles had a few but never reached that number now I have one hope I don’t get to regret it!

thanks in advance for any info .

cheers Paul

you have to order by which sensor is fitted, brown or black plug determines the rack manufacturer, but physical check is needed as 2 types could have been fitted at the factory.

I have used these guys before and cannot fault the service.

Hi urbanpanzer thanks for your reply  I will have a look at the sensor to see what colour it is but whereabouts is it situated ,could you tell me ,is it easy to see or is it situated in the depths of the bay and is it just a straight replacement ie taking out the old and replacing it with new/reconditioned unit?

thanks

you need to look at where the steering column comes through the bulkhead and connects to the steering rack, thats where the sensor is. You can see it from underneath on the right hand side looking through wheel arch / where the steering rack is.

Below is a picture of where the sensor is (circled) brown ones unplug, the one in the picture is hard wired.

As far as straight replacement, well yes as such, but it does involve dropping down the subframe a little to get the rack out and there is special tools to re-align that when refitting, you could probably get away without them but they do make it easier.

You also (according to skoda / vw)  need to replace the mounting bolts of the sub frame as they are stretch bolts. You can only really buy these from the dealer/ vw specialists, I'm sure there will be posts added to this where people don't replace the bolts, each to their own on that one, I always have on each rack I have replaced.

additonal you will ideally need new seals for the steering pipes and some new steering fluid offcourse.

Thanks for the information however I think it’s a bit out of my skill set but at least I know the work that’s required and your posts have been most helpful.

thanks Paul
