Alloys and tires.

Featured Replies

Hey folks,

I could see that the subject was brought up before but no definitive answer was given. I run at the moment 225/40 18R on my Mk3 Octy.

I know that fitting the bigger sidewall tires, I would run the incorrect mph and I am ok with it. But the question is would it actually fit the 45sidewall?

Asking the ones that actually tried and fitted those. Do not want to but four tires and then to realise that they rub on all four corners….

Hope to hear from you guys :)

The car's speedo over-reads on standard tyres. At an indicated 70mph you might only be doing about 67mph.

By fitting tyres that have up to 5% bigger outside diameter you increase the accuracy of the speedo.

It's easy to check using GPS, as google maps now has a speedo option.

If you want more sidewall height, changing to 225/45R17 and suitable rims would be better than fitting oversize 225/45R18. 225/45R17 is a common size so would be much cheaper than 225/45R18.

So if you buy 5 tyres, the 18" ones will cost £242.45 more than the 17" ones. That's a huge increase, or in percentage terms almost 50% more.

Changing from 225/45R17 to 225/45R18 will increase the gearing by 4.0%. With such a big increase, the car won't pull the gears so easily.

Thank you very much for your input, Carlston.

Yes, sounds like I was on the wrong path.....especially considering the gearing change and added on stress..

Much appreciated

On this note.....

Found some 17" alloys but not sure that they will fit....

So if anyone has experience, does 17" alloys from VW Eos will fit Mk3 Octavia? From all I could find is that theonly thing that would differ that much is that ET would differ but from what I understood, it should not affect the fitment....(EOS has ET47 and my current 18" VRS ones are ET51)... The seller was not much of a help... 😞

They should fit fine. You would need to check that the brake caliper doesn't rub on the back of the wheel. If it does though, you just need to get a set of spacers.
