Brake pad thoughts... !?!?

Featured Replies

Bought new brake pads today for my wife's ( 2012 ) Octavia-II,
but was surprised when I opened the box tonight and see that only one of the inner brake pads has brake wear sensor.

Should not both inner brake pads have wear sensors 🤔

They've been like this on Skodas since the 1990s.

Yes, this is normal.

I note that you have gone for the Ferodo Eco Green pads, which I have and don't particularly like. They are certainly ok-ish, and better than the Apex ones that were on the front of the car previously, but I'd like a bit more initial sharpness, and they don't give as much confidence as you'd like when you come to the end of a really hard braking event (but, as I say better than what was on the car previously).

On the other hand, they don't generate much dust, so there is that.

I have come to the same conclusionas you Camlobe, on my Octavia and Yeti the Germanic sounding but Chinese pads that came bundled with the new brake discs were appalling, changing to Eco Friction on the front only transformed the Octavia and I was very very happy with them.

Oon the Yeti which has the smaller 280mm front brakes I had the same experience with the shonky pads bundled with the new discs (although these were allegedly Delphi) I fitted Eco Friction front and rear and am dissapointed as they are exactly as you describe even after bedding in and some overloaded trailer towing.

If you cange to another make of pad which gives you the feel, progression and confidence that is lacking please post on here.

I have Pagid discs and pads all round and although they work they're not very positive, suffering glazing from spirited driving.  I cannot even execute a handbrake turn on a good dry surface so any pointers toward pads that perform would be good.

I cannot tell you what is better than the Ferodos, but:

I've always  had good experience with Mintex 1144's in the past, but that's years ago, and there is probably no commonality between what I had then, and what you'd get now. (Mintex are now part of the TMD group, along with Textar, Don and Pagid, and Mintex are difficult to find on the UK market these days. Also I haven't seen anything clear about how the pads relate amongst the various TMD products).

I'm tempted by Pagid (see above, though), Jurid and Brembo (almost certainly the X rather the non-X pads). I think any would be, in some way, better than the Ferodos, but maybe at the cost of wear, dust, noise etc. I'll put up with that compromise in order to get brake performance that doesn't worry me at times.

Really, I probably want bigger disks, but my insurance might want their pound of flesh, so if I could get decent performance with just better pads, that's my preferred route.

I will match the new brake pads with new ZIMMERMANN brake discs on wife's Octavia-II.

I have only good experiences with FERODO Premier brake pads and have always been very satisfied with them.
Have them on many of the family's VAG cars.
That's why I chose them again.

Thats also why I chose them again but was dissapointed this time, whether the pad composition has changed or the Octavia had better brakes as a starting point I do not know but Camlobes description is exactly how I would describe them.

Handbrake turns, I used to be the king of, rear disc brakes were never as good as drums even on a light car like a Caterham/Westfield etc, never managed one in the dry on any of my Skodas but they all held with confidence on a hill, the Yeti doesn't give that confidence.

totally agree, I replaced mine all round including brake fluid, they're perfectly fine for normal driving but if you push them slightly they suffer from brake fade and I suspect they'd warp if you went further.. saying that I'm at 15k in they're still ok for everyday driving
