No, this is not scaremongering...this is a real and present danger which I have already flagged up and shows how politicians, both local and national, should NOT get involved in things that they have zero knowledge of, including balcony solar.

There are NO early warnings with electricity; once a real-life danger situation has occurred, it is only discovered by people/animals coming into contact with it, which may be the last thing that they do ⚠️.

We all accept that it is dangerous to install a socket next to a sink or in a bathroom, and yet some people are prepared to risk lifes by onstreet charging from their own home electric supply. What they do not understand is the dangers of different circuits being connected to different earthing bonds etc. There is a very good reason why all extraneous metalwork in a building has to be bonded together, and this is it.

Nice to know there's still some billionaires who're a bit philanthropic IMO. Actually made something of himself apparently inventing optical devices to help people.

I'd rather a billionaire like that than ****ers who go full Nazi and kiss butt for tax breaks or inside information.

Lots of money to be made with eye wear or operations. The car collection of David Moulsdale @ the Moulsdale Foundation Museum is well worth a visit. It is in Bishopbriggs Glasgow. There are open days when you might be lucky to get a ticket. David Mousdale's fortune came from Optical Express.

Incredible. Many wonderful luxury vehicles about be them BEV or ICE. Lets see just how they are behaving in a decade or so. Not that those getting them new or nearly new now are likely to have them still in 10 years. If they do have them and had no major expenditure for repairs they could be a real bargain transportation.

Many luxury cars are incredibly low mileage though, tend to spent a lot of time in warm garages and lower spec cars become daily drivers.

It seems that lithium-ion batteries could all have been designed in such a way that aggravates possible thermal runaway situations. According to a new scientific research document that Barrie Crampton has knowledge of, which shows that encasing them in sealed compartments is the worst thing that can happen to them.

It is not open flames or glowing red-hot metal that cause adjacent cells to enter a runaway, but super-hot gases; it also shows that liquid immersion also increases the temperature and intensity of the resultant fire by a factor of 21 times. The report suggests that if heat, etc. is allowed to escape to the open air, then thermal runaways could be reduced.

I do wish that he would provide links to this study, not just him but other YouTubers as well.

If this report is correct, then it is a step in the right direction.

Sounds like the Renault battery fire suppression, fire fighting is being adopted for other marques of EVs and will be used in Li NMC, LFP and presumably Sodium batteries as they start to become more common. Each iteration of battery chemistry is less prone to thermal runaway as well as being cheaper. Still think inboard fire system might be better to nip in bud.

We see oft in airfreight logistics.

I would hope the 30% SoC test is done but I fear not as oft it should.

Should push much of freight on to rail and truck rather than air and sea but that is not happening perhaps ad myxh as it should. I must have at least 50 items with Lithium batteries I reckon, maybe a lot more. Must do a run to the recycling centre rather than leave devices hanging around.

Considering they originate from China, is there a direct rail/road connection from here to there?

The do do something as we would arrange these power tools with biggish Li batteries terminating in Gernany.

Tortuous jortney as getting past Iran, Russia cannot be easy. Kazakhstan, Caspian sea, Azabajan, Georgia, Black Sea and into Romania just would guess but very convoluted and was about 3 times more than sea ie $7k or more a box but the Chinese goods are oft going south of South Africa and raking about 2 weeks longer. Arctic route would be a great time and cost saver.

But these batteries are a tiny fraction of the capacity of those fitted to EVs so the actual risk is also a tiny fraction, so are you advocating that same rules should also apply to them?

BYD has now launched and using its own up to 9k car carrying car carrying vessels. I would think they have really stepped up fire fighting systems and that would be in part to identify any fire starting really early on via fire alarms and quick acting. I presune super massive fire blankets and foam or powder although water also seems to be used but that is not what I was taught on fighting chemical and electrical fires.

With open single floor and no fire doors the standard methods we would use ie flooding compartments and holds with CO2 or inert gases does not sound that it is an option being employed.

My company, Ceva - CMA currently move 5.5M finished cars, up from 4M not long ago, and we are using the schemes I mention above. As an ex Merchant seaman, yes I had a seaman's discharge book and identity card, I worry more so for the sailor's well being.

BYD gave had their vessels fir a while so that is old news. It currently makes zero difference what ever means they deploy to stop battery fires on a ship carrying electric cars as none of those you just listed will either put a battery fire out or contain it given the way they have to lash the cars down and there are no fire breaks on board.
