the truth about electric cars

You're right, this is pure clickbait; diesel is going to be around in huge volumes for many years to come for all of the reasons already mentioned.

All about demand and margins.

If demand relates to diesel cars doing the miles on the road that is in a natural decline as their percentage on the road declines.

Also about margins. So garage operators claim that selling fuel is very low margin and they make more from selling pop and crisps than from fuel. EV charging you xan have a captive audience for about 20 minutes and selling them a coffee etc can provide really income.

Would lile to see more garages rip out their pumps and create sites lije Gridserve's Electric Forecourts. So impressive just need more of them, if they can get the Grid connection or install battery Mega Packs.

Shell did this in Jan 2022, more please.

I'm afraid that the whole diesel thing has not been thoroughly thought through at all. If what you would like to see happens, it won't be long before everyone involved will object to the impact that their decisions have had on life as we know it. Just sit and think of all the things that we take completely for granted today that are actually only possible because of the use of diesel. Everything from goods in shops, to mayor superstructure, roads, bridges, and buildings etc.

We should all be very careful of the things we wish for, as most of them will come back and bite, and bite hard.

My old firm Ceva is absolutely dedicated to reducing carbon footprint print and whether that is going full EV, or using HVO or LNG in the case of ships that can load up to 4,000 tonnes of fuel at a time.

I think diesel needs to be there in case we have a "nuclear" winter caused by war or natural disasters like Icelandic volcanos or the Atlantic warm water stream stopping as it is due to in the next 2 or 3 decades which would lower SE England average temperatures by about 10 C. We would need all the energy diversities we can get.

Be interesting to see if UK adopts a diesel scrappemage scheme again.

Talking to an Irish Taxi driver a few months ago he had just acquired a Toyota BZ4 and benefitted from a 10k Euros scrappage on his Dacia Logan / Sandero scrappage which was only a few years old. Seems even to me that scrapping a say 3, or 4 or 5 year old car is excessive.

UK scrappage scheme was only £2k i recall and there are a few smoky old diesels on the road that should be fixed or scrapped.

Another thought is that if the UK was to introduce Anti Dumping on EVs it would create a windfall tax receipt of thousands of Chinese EVs coming out of Cystoms Warehouse at the UK docks. Having been part of the Customs team at Portbury where we gad up to 100k vehicles in stock could ve a tidy sum just on the ordinary customs duty front !

Sad UK did not get it right like France did

Not strictly electric car related, but I know that many EV'ers also have home battery installations, so this is a warning of possible troubles; I would not want anyone to suffer.

The national grid does not look to be very robust; Ofgem have started to post the following advice on social media.

Reaaaad awrabahhhhht it.

How odd and weird that they have only just suddenly started posting this then, as we head into winter, just saying.

World changing rapidly and things the UK had presumed it could rely on ie regular electricity from France's 50 odd nuclear power stations look more fragile now with low river levels providing insufficient cooling water and it is the same over much of Europe.

Many EV owners from UK to New Zealand, South America and much of Asia have learnt better to trust one's own power generation at a country and personal level.

The hundreds of millions who now gave their own solar panels, most on a small scale of a few panels andmaybe car batteries are learning to survive without power generation from coal, gas and oil.

If we many multiple and long backups it will be interesting to see if those of us witb batteries and panels get left alone to use the resources we have inveztdx in over the past years.

We have seen bad aspects of society with thousands of public charger cables cut. Some of use could go a week without mains power. Our cars can act as big support batteries as well as our home batteries.

These messages of government warning of potential energy and food shortages gave been kicking around for a few weeks and The Survivalist cult gave been round for decades. I have been following it since my teenage times. Only one of our 3 EVs has V2L but I am expecting that when the other 2 are changed V2L is a must have.

Thanks, so that's why Ofgem are posting those messages. I looked on some of the news channels and there was nothing there about it. So it was not scaremonging but there could be problems on the horizon. Maybe they worried because it has been really cold the last couple of days and people are turning the heating on?

Charger cables have been stolen for a while and as the price of copper goes up, and faster charges introduced, they need larger cables which become more attractive to thieves. It's a vicious circle really.

Yes, as we head into winter. Around the time we get annual storms that bring down power lines in some rural or not even that rural areas.
Charley says PSA films on the TV have been around since before I was born so it's nothing new.

Storm cycle in Atlantic distorted by Super El Nino.

Been no proper Hurricanes this autumn.

Wet late Autumn predicted for Europe then snowy Feb like 62 / 63 maybe.

Cairngorm Mountain showed snow yesterday at the CAIRNGORM sign and somebody said 'First Snow of Winter'. But it would be the first snow of Autumn 2026, Surely they should know the seasons. Frosty this morning and lovely blue cloudless sky.

Indeed, but the reason why I commented on it in the first place is that A) it is not a PSA on TV where they normally show warnings/advice such as this, B) it is extremely early for such warnings and was possibly so because of the real threat to global oil because of the Donalds' illegal war, and C) it appeared on a site that I just happened to be one of long standing local moderators on, and this is the very first time that such a warning has appeared, and hence why I thought that EVr's might like to know.

Wow first journey in one of the EVs in the cooler period. Mych less range and lower energy efficiency. Hine to look for a newer EV perhaps. Will be happier when daughter has her home charger installed which is due soon.

Tory Boy Andrew Bowie MP thinks that the next Elected Conservative & Unionist Government can impose New Nuclear plants on Scotland. About time if there is to be New Nuclear in Scotland that they get building it. Start at Dumfries House, Balmoral Estate, Castle of May and any other Royal Residences. KC3 can just give his permission & lets see what the Local Authority Planning make of that. In England Jacob Rees Mogg's Estate looks like an ideal location for a Small Nuclear Modular installation. Maybe a AI Data Centre as well.

No surprise there, even less range if using the heating etc, far worse than it us with an ICE vehicle which use wasted energy for heating. . Why are you surprised by it, you always come across as well seasoned EV owner and driver of many years standing.

Not surprised really just reminded of the change in battery performance once we have colder overnight temperatures. It got down to 3C, ie 276K, so battery was on the cool side. Energy efficiency took a while to climb from much over 3 miles per KWh.Had electric cars for near 2,000 days now and not one of them regretted transitioning to EV from ICE. A cold snap means one needs to recalibrate and tweak ones behaviour in a few areas. But the continual flow of economic advantageous, added to this month by the removal of VAT on home supply and therefore when home charging is ICE'ing on the cake. Also seeing the harm that added CO2 is doing to the planet going EV please me that I have stopped adding to that disastrous situation we are sadly leaving our offspring.

When I see the reduction in range I start thinking about how much better the new version of the Scenic is, particularly the new 67 KWh LFP version with 220 hp.

I could charge to 100% regularly rather than only 80% with my current NMC battery as well as having about 30 miles more range with a full battery, much cheaper as it is LFP tech and 50 hp more are all Scenics will have the 220 hp motor. Press release attached and the improvement is staggering and for less money. Not going back to ICE for a main car ever as far as I can see as EVs just have too many advantages and aspects like the reduced winter range, even with heat pumps on all out cars, minor inconvenience and charging up for little money, free or being paid to charge up, cheap servicing etc and the cars getting cheaper and cheap is holding nearly all the cards. if I needed to do silly miles in a day I would probably hire a Polestar or European Car of the Year Mercedes CLA. Previous European Car of the Years, 2024 and 2025, got both of these but will not be taking on a CLA but impressed by its long range if not its price even though down to £39k now.

Good, I'm genuinely pleased for you that you're happy and satisfied with your choice; however, that is not true for everyone, and not everyone would be willing to make the sacrifices, or indeed in some cases be able to even consider a transition to an EV for a plethora of reasons. Some have already been mentioned, others not.

I know that right now, the cost of diesel is hard to swallow but for most folk who actually own their cars, i.e. not on leases or company schemes etc, for the extra costs incurred in buying an EV and having a chargers installed (if they can) that the cost of doing so would fund the actual increased cost of the diesel for many tens of thousands of miles and years to come, so if their cars, like mine, are relatively modern and running perfectly OK, the switching over would have a negative effect on their finances at a time when there is the highest pressure of all time on them.
