Steering wheel controls not working after clock spring replaced

Featured Replies

Hi everyone! new here.

I had an issue about a year and a half ago when my steering wheel controls went dead and airbag warning came on. Took the car to a VAG 'specialist' and they diagnosed a faulty clock spring and replaced it. After they fitted it the issue was resolved but I noticed when I was driving later that week that the MFD control wheel was dead and the cruise control when pressed said 'non functional'. All other buttons are working fine, radio, volume, the horn, light controls and wipers.

I didn't have time to take it back to them as this was at the height of the 1st wave of the pandemic and I was working quite hard at the hospital. So naturally I let the problem linger and I've decided to try and get it sorted my local garage (not the original repairer) when described the problem said that they thought it was an issue with programming of the wheel and clock spring and that only a few people know how to do it.

Anyone experienced this issue before?

Either they have fitted a cheaper lower level clockspring that does not support the cruise & MFD functions or they have fitted the correct revision and not coded it or coded it incorrectly.

Take it to someone with VCDS and they can find what module is fitted and its coding, the correct part numbers for the high line functions are listed on the RossTech help pages.

I have MFD but would like cruise control, the clockspring fitted to my vehicle will not support it, I will have to buy the high line one and code it correctly for the functions as well as fitting the cruise control stalk.

Why not take it back to the specialist that did the work?
