Kamiq 2020 problem with brakes (winter)

Featured Replies

Hi,

Has anyone had problems with Kamiq or Skodas which have the same brakes at freezing temperatures? I know 2 cars which has had similar symptoms at first use of brakes in the morning or after longer parking at daytime.

The brake pedal doesn´t move at all in the first braking attempt, although the driver has used the brake pedal at starting the car, and when turning the car around in the yard. But when he has been getting closer to a bigger road intersection and started to brake, the pedal is "hard" and only good luck has prevented any collisions.

This happens randomly, and only when it´s below 0 degrees celsius.

What happens at 0C? (hint, it's a state change in a common compound)

Answer to Your question might be that 0C is close to the temp range when water turns to ice. But does the kamiq brakes have water instead of brakefluid or something ?? 😆

Exactly; there could (not is, could) be something getting frozen in the braking system. Even with a new car, I'd suggest checking the water content in the brake fluid with a hygrometer. Also, I don't know the details of "Scandinavian specification"; does the brake servo include an intake air drier?

Car(s) are under warranty and I know that one of the cars have been inspected at skoda workshop but they haven’t found anything wrong with the car, they’ve changed the brakefluid and rims on the winter tyres.

I do agree with You, that water is somehow the reason, but in which part of the system..

My guess would be that there is water somewhere in the brake servo unit, as the brake pedal doesn’t move at all when the problem occurs. If the problem was with pistons, pads or discs the pedal would move.

Well, I'm suspecting the ABS block, and it needs a specific computerised bleeding procedure, but we're thinking on similar lines yes.

It’s pretty cool in Scotland for much of the year, but in decades of car ownership I’ve never suffered from dodgy brakes on a cold start.

One advanced driving/ riding tip I learned long ago is to test your brakes after start up.  Before mixing it with other traffic.

I’m lucky living in a cul-de-sac with ample opportunity to brake test.

True, but I've never experienced it as cold in the central belt as it can get in Finland where the OP lives.
