Oil Leak

Featured Replies

Hi folks.

Was doing a check on the engine bay today and spotted a bit of oil around the plastic rocker cover. I cleaned the area as best as I could and took it for a spin and it tools like there might be a trace from this bolt area.

I don't think it's pcv related as it wasn't mist but actual oil.

I don't know when this started I didn't notice much oil missing from the dipstick.

Is this something common? I won't pull the trigger yet on the repairs  as I want to be sure what I need to buy. Looks very expensive to me as it involves pulling injectors out if it's a rocker gasket issue.

I'm not dead certain this is correct, but it is cheap, quick, and won't do any harm. Check for loose rocker cover bolts, and tighten if required.

First thought in my mind, don't go murder tight find torque valve if required or tighten sensibly and evenly in stages a little each time, it might be only that one but if more than one I'd (as a non-mechanic) go opposite sides and working from middle out.

I should have said, "loose" tends to mean loose enough to be not even finger tight.

I did managed to tighten it just a bit more with a small ratchet with one hand. I didn't go over board. I'm just waiting to take it on a longer journey to see if it does it again.

That should be right; I normally use a 1/4" drive set, unless working on something like a British Laylow A series where the set screws are bigger than my 12mm socket.
