skoda superb 2012 170 crdti oil leak after dealer service

Featured Replies

just had main dealer service and now seeing oil patches under the engine

these patches change position depending where i park, due to the undertrays can't see what is leaking.

took car back to dealer who diagnosed a leak from pinched rubber seal on underneath of plastic filter housing cap

which they replaced foc.

Next morning slightly heavier oil patches, dealer will take it in tomorrow to replace the plastic filter housing cap as they think it may be distorted.

When i originally took it in for service they gave me a video showing everything dry and said no leaks present!

anyone else had this type of problem, have they missed something else?

Assuming it is engine oil then there are only really three possible touch points during the oil change...

1) Oil filter housing

2) Sump plug

3) Oil filler cap.

The common issues associated with each are:

1) As already mentioned, the filter housing is plastic and the screw cap has a maximum torque level. If over torqued they can distort and / or crack. The inside of the filter housing lid / cap has a rubber seal, again as mentioned if this is incorrectly fitted (it is possible for it to drop into the wrong slot), or is stretched, split or snapped during installation, then oil may be able to pass.

2) Some dealers extract the oil from out of the oil filler opening so the sump plug may not have been touched, some dealers do still remove the sump plug to drain the oil. Some dealers completely replace the sump plug for a new one (complete with a new crush washer), others reuse the old sump plug. If the plug is cross threaded, over-tightened or not tightened enough, or the crush washer is worn or has failed then again oil may pass.

3) Finally as the oil is replaced and the levels checked it is common for dealers to accidentally forget to replace the oil filler cap. This should be easy to diagnose though as it will be obvious the minute you lift the bonnet by the missing cap and oil covering most of the engine and underside of the bonnet.

Thanks for your input

oil filler cap is correctly fitted and no oil on top of engine

Oil change was via sump plug

If the sump plug is dry it only leaves the plastic filter cap and when it goes back to dealer on wednesday I hope that fixes it.

Other than this the car runs like a dream

  • 3 weeks later...

A few years ago after aservice at my local dealer I was getting oil patches on the drive.  Took it back and they said it was probably residue from the oil change, they took the undertray off, steam cleaned it and gave me the car back.

Day or two later oil patches worse than ever, took it back, turned out they had cracked the filter housing during the oil change and there was a bad oil leak...!

They admitted they must have damaged the housing and it was replaced FOC.  I have the CR140 engine but likely the same story with yours.  I was told it was a 200 - 250 quid job normally.

If it hasn't been fixed I would be getting the housing checked over.

Cheers

thanks for your reply.

situation now resolved at dealers expense.

whilst I think main dealers are very expensive RRG skoda in Bolton Lancashire dealt with my problem in a courteous and prompt manner at their expense.

p.s. I lived in Kilbirnie Ayrshire for a few years early on in my career, lovely area of Scotland

Good to hear all resolved.

I have had a similar experience, it was Skoda at Ayr that did the work and overall they have been fine to deal with and had a few warranty repairs done with no issues.

I had elderly relatives at Kilbirnie and Beith years ago and used to visit fairly often.

All the best...

Digressing a bit Off Topic....

Ayr was certainly a fine town back in the day 80s/90s era, so many good memories.  I remember the Tesco well before it moved to the racecourse.  There is a good picture of it if you do a google image search.

Sadly Ayr is a shadow of its former self, South Ayrshire Council have run it into a state of despair and disrepair.  The whole debacle that is ongoing of the railway station is a farce, Burns Square council offices have now been demolished leaving a bit of a mess and the high street is littered with empty shops and rough sleepers.

The Council have missed a trick with Ayr, it could be quite a tourist destination but they prefer to ignore the town's people's wishes and focus on crazy schemes like knocking down the Kyle Centre to build a new sports centre in the middle of town...

The one major tourist event (the Air Show) the council decided not to continue supporting.....go figure!

I remember going to Ayr most Saturdays and the High Street was rammed with decent shops....  This video brings back memories of better times....  https://youtu.be/PJC2kvZxMtg  (spot some cool retro classics !)

To be fair, its not just Ayr, its the plague of modern life on the high street....

Cheers Dave

What was the issue in the end?

overtightened plastic cap of filterhousing had distorted allowing oil to spray out and onto undertrays

Thank you.
