Bearing like noise audible at speeds over 60 kmh

Featured Replies

Hello everyone and happy holidays!

It's been almost 3 months since I started hearing this noise. I have a Skoda Octavia 2012 VRS TDI.

At first it was not that upsetting, but today, it got worse.

It is getting audible at speeds over 60 kmh, and it's dependant on the speed, you can hear and see that at 100 kmh it's getting really loud.

Do you have any idea what the issue could be?

Thank you in advance!

Tyres would be my guess, especially the rears.

If they are NOT directional tyres try swapping them from side to side.

Thanks. AG Falco

Thank you for your reply! I don't think it's the tires, as I already swapped them from summer to winter ones. It's making the same noise as before.

Did you put the winters back in the same place as they were removed from back in the spring?

Is there any sawtooth to the inside edge of the tyres?

Wheel bearing is next thing to check.

Yes, I put them in the same place as they were removed in the spring.

Actually I think I saw a little bump to the inside edge of a back tire. Do you think that can cause such a huge noise at those speeds?

Run your fingers along the inside edge of the tyres toward the front of the car first then towards the rear of the car.

Is the leading edge of each tread block higher than the trailing edge? feathering or sawtooth pattern?

Thanks. AG Falco

I think it's sawtooth pattern, there's more wear on the inner side of the wheel. I think it's finally time for me to pick a new set of rims and tyres for it. Both winter and summer, haha, my wallet will cry a lot

Try this first.

Is there a clunk when lifting off and putting on power? Then its probably a failed/failing differential bearing. Can be checked with car on a ramp and check for side play on the output shaft by twisting and pulling at the same time, there should be none.

Check tyres as said, and the wheel bearings. Wheel bearings can be checked by lifting the wheel off the ground, place one hand on the middle section of the suspension spring and spin the wheel eith the other. You will feel the vibration in the spring if the wheel bearing is failing.

Thank you so much for all your extensive help! I will make sure to take a deeper look over everything you said and report back.

In any case that no any wheel may have no bearing issues, i would guess issues with  bearings in the gearbox/transmission.

Exactly same situation faced in a VW Caddy, when speeding up the continuous noise was growing annoyingly and sounded exactly under the car, not tyres rolling.
