HP or Windows 10 problem / advice

Please note (it may be obvious) that this post is from a not very tech savvy soul.....

 

It seems my (other) laptop (HP15s-fq1505na 10th Gen i5) has crashed, BSOD I think it is. It is only two years old and was new from curry's warehouse iirc. (how long it sat in warehouse I don't know). It generally only gets used for banking purposes checking statements and generally once a month, so also updated once a month too. 

It was only purchased due to the ending of Win7 updates and I was / still am happy with this Win7 laptop currently using.

 

A good first question I need to suss out is, is it an issue with the Windows 10 OS or is it an issue with the laptop itself. (so a Microsoft issue or a HP issue).

The first meltdown showed as Windows 10 stopcode / critical process died. so assuming a win10 problem.

 

Ok, I can start it up sometimes and sometimes it fails straight away. It has struggled to do updates in the past (another thread a while ago) but this seemed to have been sorted by taking it to work and getting the office lass to connect to work wi-fi and get the updates installed. It has been fine for a while after doing this. (She has now however, moved to another job, but still with the company).

I resorted to trying to reset the Windows 10 Operating System as this came up eventually on the screen, I thought I would give it a try.

It seemed to work and setup starts, but within a short while it stopped working again. A screen comes up stating your computer has issues, please wait while we collect some info and we will restart it for you. (I assume this bit is HP related though???) It does not shut down at all, well, without forcing it to.

The second stopcode showed after doing the reset and was stopcode WHEA uncorrectable error.

 

Any advice on this so far will be gratefully received.

I forgot this bit. The HP BIOS has updated (or at least tried to) itself a number of times now. 

 

This is why I am unsure if it is a Microsoft or HP issue, or both?????

It gives me 100% complete, but it will not restart itself. I have to force it to shut down, even after leaving it a good while.

The WHEA bit suggests its a Hardware rather than a software issue.
But, just incase, try this (instructions copied from a website)
 

click the Start button and type "cmd" into the search bar. select Command Prompt (Admin) or CMD but run as administrator. Into the command prompt, type in (or copy&paste it):

sfc /scannow

This should do an integrity check of the system.

The easiest way to do it on that list is using the performance monitor, as this is more visual rather than typing code. See what it comes back with from both of those.

A bit of an fyi for interested parties. 

I had searched on this issue and found how to do a full System Extensive Test (Turn on / press ESC once a second / press F2) brings up the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics, and ran a fast test and then an extensive test.

Everything has passed (just with one check / you can leave it running over and over / loop test, until it finds a fault), although it does tell me that the diagnostics version is not up to date, including how to update this. I will get onto this asap.

 

This time the windows setup (remember I did a re-install of Win10) has all gone well although I have not connected it to the internet yet.

 

ONE QUESTION, anyone know if it is likely to use LOADS of data for updates, or (if it continues to work properly) will the updates just be the usual and latest items??

I ask as I have limited GB and may take it to work if the updates are likely to use lots of data.

Go to settings then click on update and security. O the right hand side of that page in blue writing you'll see OS Build and system info. Click that and you'll get a page like this below. You can then check when that build was released to determine how up to date you are and whether an update will be massive or just things like security patches etc
