Best Engine Oil ?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I know this is a popular question, and I've looked throughout the site for answers, but nothing definitive, so I though I'd make a post.

For my Diesel 2018 Octavia, I'm about to purchase oil and a filter. Anyone have a specific recommendation for an oil manufacturer, type, and the best place to buy it?

Thanks

Opie Oils have always sorted me out, even when I ordered the wrong oil the first time I ordered oil for my Octavia.  I ordered some just recently, and they advised me on the upgrade to the oil I usually get, as it wasn't listed anymore.

What ever and where ever you get VW 507 00 so 5w 30 Full Synthetic III for a 2018 or earlier TDI. You could use 0w 30 FS III if VW 507 00.  It is Long Life oil regardless of fixed or variable service intervals.  Nothing special or expensive is required.  Quantum / Fuchs, Comma, Tesco or Asda or anyplace really.  Castrol / Mobil / Shell etc not necessary as nothing in them that other oil producers have not added.       Those that have VW 509 00 so 0w 20 FS IV and want to use that will pay a bit more for that.

Hi guys

thanks for the responses so far.

I am not fully sure if my car needs 5L or 5.5L, how can I check this?

Most service kits have 6l of oil. I just add 5 litres then the last bit I pour in 100ml at a time and check the dipstick till I am near the top of the max.

Service fill is supposed to be 4.7 litres for the diesel. In regards to what oil is manufacturer recommended for the diesel is Castrol Edge 5w30ll. If you go to a Skoda dealership for servicing they will use Quantum 5w30. You can buy Quantum at the dealers trade counter usually for about £25 for 5L. Castrol Edge is 5w30 is often on offer on Amazon at £25 for 4L. The oil filter from the dealers according to my receipt from last year was £9.35 inc vat.

It is the wrong spec for your car needs to be VW 504 00/ 507 00. If you want cheap oil just get quantum  from any Skoda, VW, Seat etc dealer.

I usually pay £22-£23 for 5L for my car from AutopartsUK but this time I want the recommended stuff for as close as possible to £22-£23 - is it possible?

Quantum is £25 for 5l at the dealers usually, sometimes it’s on promo for £20 for 5l.

Ah right, cool

what’s the difference between Quantum & Castrol Edge 5w30ll?

How much of a price difference will I be looking at between them?

They are both the proper spec.

Castrol Edge is usually more expensive than Quantum.  Castrol Edge depending on where you buy it can be very expensive.

I know car responciveness and feel is something  subjective but i bought a 2019 (january)  skoda octavia estate petrol 1.0 tsi  27000 miles in july 2021 that had been seviced by a non skoda dealer with 5w-40,at sale point  As the car had a skoda five year warrentee sublect service deal, i have just had a SKODA oil service and plugs...the engine is so much more free running and stop starts are faster ,so it 508 from now on

@geoffrye  They used 5w 40 Full Synthetic  and that is VW502 00, so not Long Life.

Perfectly OK for fixed service intervals.

Your 2019 1.0TSI left the factory with VW508 / 509 00   (Long life oil.)

New spark plugs might well have an engine running better.

0w 20 FS IV, so Long Life oil might reduce fuel consumption.   5 years on & on further and we will see how the engines life is going.

Right guys - I am at the very last stages of my decision lol

I have found Millers Oils XF Premium 5w30 C3 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil 5 Litres for £26.79 or I can go for Millers Oils XF Premium 0w30 C3 VW Fully Synthetic Engine Oil, 506 00, 507 00 5 Litres for £31.16

I want to know what is the difference between them? Which one is most best for my car?

Thanks

0w will be "flow" better  at the same cold temperature than 5w. The w is the viscosity or  "weight" of the oil. It's that simple. The higher the first number the higher the "weight"

You can use either as long as both meet 504 or 507 spec as mentioned by others above.

0w "might" be more beneficial if you live in very cold area alot of the time that's all.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have always used CASTROL EDGE 5W30 LL with a new filter ( Mahle ) at 10.000 with out fail !!!

cars done 300,000 plus with no probs at all to date. Changing at 10000 seems

to keep the oil use age down to 0.5L MAX  which is good for the DPF.

Always remember cheap or dirty or incorrect oil will clog up turbos egr and your DPF

IN NO TIME AT ALL...as it will over heat and burn/vaporise.

@Berty21   Welcome.

That is a pretty high mileage well done on that.

30 odd oil changes is a lot.

The cost of the correct oil makes no difference really,

so if a Supermarket branded one or big Named Brand like Castrol which more expensive to buy.

Certainly back this method for servicing and its the oil and filter I use on my 2.0TDI Octavia.

Done 70,000 since my ownership and was dealer FSH before.

The engine is sweet and very responsive.

It may cost a few ££ extra for the oil. That is peace of mind for the savings in other areas.

Even if the DPF lasts 20% longer life its worth it.

castrol edge.
